Horror punk is a dark style of music mixing Gothic rock and punk rock sounds with morbid imagery. Often, song topics are taken from horror movies, but the best horror punk creates atmosphere by telling tales through the song. It is closely related to an often overlaps with the Death Rock movement; which tends to lean more towards the goth or rockabilly sound - usually excluding hardcore punk and metal bands. The Misfits are considered to be the first horror punk band. They were followed by bands like Samhain_(band) (now known as the Doom Metal band Danzig_(band), headed by the former frontman of The Misfits), 45 Grave, and Mourning Noise. In England about the same time, the band Rudimentary Peni went from their anarcho-punk roots to something more death rock, lyrically influenced by the works of HP Lovecraft at the time, and created another horror punk sound.
