Homestead is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 31,909. The city lies at the southern end of Florida's Turnpike, and US-1 continues down to the Florida Keys. There is a large United States Air Force airbase at Homestead, and a small private airport which has breeding Burrowing Owls. A major tourist attraction is the mysterious Coral Castle, built by Edward Leedskalnin in the 1920s. The Fruit and Spice Park is also of interest. Homestead bore the brunt of Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 hurricane, which hit on August 24, 1992. == Geography == Homestead is located at 25°28'16" North, 80°28'5" West (25.471190, -80.468122). The racial makeup of the city is 61.00% White (U.S. Census), 22.55% African American (U.S. Census), 0.50% Native American (U.S. Census), 0.76% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.08% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census), 9.84% from Race (U.S. Census), and 5.27% from two or more races. 51.83% of the population are Hispanic (U.S. Census) or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race. There are 10,095 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are Marriage living together, 22.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.54. In the city the population is spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 15.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 107.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.2 males.
