Rob Gibson |} Highland (''a' Ghaidhealtachd'' in Scottish Gaelic) is the name of the largest administrative region in Scotland. It shares a border with Perth and Kinross, Moray and Argyll and Bute. These councils, and Angus and Stirling, also have areas of the Scottish Highlands within their administrative boundaries. It covers the mainland and inner-Hebridean parts of the Traditional counties of Scotland of Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, and Cromartyshire as well as all of Sutherland, Nairnshire and Caithness as well as the far north-west of Argyll. The region was created in 1975, and had the districts Badenoch and Strathspey, Caithness District (1975 to 1996), Inverness, Lochaber, Nairn (disambiguation), Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, Sutherland (disambiguation). In 1996 these district councils were wound up and their functions were transferred to Highland Council, making it a unitary authority. These districts continue in use as areas for area committees.
