Administered from the Chapel-en-le-Frith, it is mostly composed of high moorland plateaux in the Dark Peak of the Peak District. High Peak is also an alternative name for the Dark Peak. The borough adjoins the boroughs of Sheffield and Barnsley in South Yorkshire, Stockport, Tameside and Oldham in Greater Manchester, Derbyshire Dales in Derbyshire, and the counties of Cheshire and Staffordshire. There are four main areas of settlement in the borough: around Buxton, Derbyshire in the south west, around New Mills in the west, around Glossop in the north west, and the Hope Valley, Derbyshire in the east.
