Hidalgo is a state in central Mexico, with an area of 20,502 km².
In 2000 the state had a population of some 2,231,000 people. The state is named after Mexican independence leader Miguel Hidalgo.
The state capital is Pachuca. Also in the state of Hidalgo is the town and ancient Toltec ruins of Tula, Mexico.
