The capital is Wiesbaden. == Geography == Situated in western-central Germany, Hessen borders on (from the north-west and clockwise) the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Its principal cities include Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Kassel, Gießen, Marburg, Offenbach, Hesse and Fulda. The main rivers in the northern part of Hesse are Fulda River and Lahn. It is a hilly countryside, the main mountain chains being the Rhön, the Westerwald, the Taunus and the Spessart. Most inhabitants live in the southernmost part of Hesse between the rivers Main and Rhine. The latter one borders Hesse on the southwest without running through the state. The mountain chain between Main and Rhine is called the Odenwald. See also List of places in Hessen. Hessen is divided into 21 districts: {| | colspan="3" | |- | width="34%" valign="top" | # Bergstrasse # Darmstadt-Dieburg # Fulda (district) # Gießen (district) # Groß-Gerau (district) # Hersfeld-Rotenburg # Hochtaunuskreis | width="33%" valign="top" |

|} These districts are grouped in three administrative regions (''Regierungsbezirk''): Kassel (region), Giessen (region) and Darmstadt (region). There are in addition five independent towns, which belong to no district: *Darmstadt *Frankfurt *Kassel *Offenbach, Hesse *Wiesbaden == History == In the early Middle Ages Hesse was a part of Thuringia, but in the War of the Thuringian Succession (1247-1264) Hesse gained its independence and became an earldom within the Holy Roman Empire. The state existed until the death of Philipp I of Hesse in 1567. Despite his earlier intentions, it was split up among his four sons from his first marriage (Philipp was a Polygamy) into much smaller states: Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt, Hesse-Rheinfels and the also previously existing Hesse-Marburg. As the latter two lines died out quite soon (1583 and 1605, respectively), Hesse-Kassel ("Northern Hesse") and Hesse-Darmstadt ("Southern Hesse") were the two core states within the Hessian lands. Several collateral lines split off during the centuries, such as in 1622 Hesse-Homburg from Hesse-Darmstadt. Hesse-Kassel was called the Electorate of Hesse from 1803 on, although since Napoleon abolished the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, there was no more emperor to elect anymore. In 1866 it was annexed by Prussia, together with the Free City of Frankfurt, Hesse-Homburg and the duchy of Nassau (duchy), which established the province of Hesse-Nassau. Hesse-Darmstadt was called the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1806 on. It managed to defend its autonomy because in the War of 1866 it had sided with the winning Prussia. During the Weimar Republic, Hesse-Nassau and Hesse (the former Hesse-Darmstadt) were two constituent states of Germany. After World War II in 1945, the state of Hesse was established within the United States occupation zone. It combined the former states of Hesse(-Darmstadt) and Hesse-Nassau, except for the parts of Hesse on the western banks of the Rhine and a strip of territory along the lower Lahn River, which became a part of Rhineland-Palatinate). See also Rulers of Hesse. == Spelling == The state is called Hessen in German_language and Hesse in English_language; the English name for the state was taken from French_language. An inhabitant of the state is a ''Hesse'' in German and a ''Hessian'' in English (see Hessian troops). Occasionally the German term ''Hessen'' is also used in English. ''Hessia'' is another variant, although rarely used. ==List of Minister-presidents of Hesse== # 1945: Ludwig Bergsträsser # 1945 - 1946: Karl Geiler # 1946 - 1950: Christian Stock (Social Democratic Party of Germany) # 1950 - 1969: Georg-August Zinn (Social Democratic Party of Germany) # 1969 - 1976: Albert Osswald (Social Democratic Party of Germany) # 1976 - 1987: Holger Börner (Social Democratic Party of Germany) # 1987 - 1991: Walter Wallmann (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) # 1991 - 1999: Hans Eichel (Social Democratic Party of Germany) # since 1999: Roland Koch (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) ==External links== * [http://www.hessen.de/ Official government portal] * [http://www.fulda-osthessen.de/ portal about east part of hessen] * [http://www.360-rhoen.de/ 360degree virtual trip through the Rhön - part of eastern hessen] la:Hassia nds:Hessen Hesse States of Germany

Hesse

Hi first time on this website and also i'm realy impressed i noticed an error an wanted to now what to do about it and how ? The Error: The State should be called "Hessen" and not "Hesse". Hesse could be used in a sentence like "he is an californian" -> "he is a hesse" and in german "Er ist ein Hesse." :Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. According to the article, it's Hessen in German, but Hesse in French and English. Is this incorrect? -- User:Tim Starling 02:04, Feb 3, 2004 (UTC) ::No it really is called Hesse in English. User:Rmhermen 02:08, Feb 3, 2004 (UTC) :::And the equivalent of "Er ist ein Hesse" would be "He is a Hessian". User:Nunh-huh 02:12, 3 Feb 2004 (UTC) ::::But this is very funny: "Hessen is also the name of the German writer Hermann Hesse, as well as the German mathematician Otto Hesse." (You know: Chile is also the name of the german minister Otto Schily, Helmut Kohl also the name of german president Horst Köhler) It's not really good English, but instead it's copying the French, like with Cologne and Munich, to say "Hesse"--if it has to be changed from the German, it should be changed to a more decidedly English form of "Hessia." But unfortunately, I haven't been able to persuade a majority of the English-speaking world of this yet. :::::Well, what does "good English" mean if it is just a private preference? For historical reasons, Hessen is called Hesse in English (and I don't think it's borrowing from French, but even if it where, so it would be then) is the word people will search for, check, etc. I think it is completely contrary to Wiki policy, and also not helpful, to go about and change this to "Hessia" because of a personal idiosyncracy. User:Clossius == Hesse-Darmstadt had sided with the winning Prussia. == "It managed to defend its autonomy because in the War of 1866 it had sided with the winning Prussia." That's false. In fact both the "Grand Duchy of Hesse" (Hesse-Darmstadt) and the "Electorate of Hesse" (Hesse-Kassel) joined the Austrian side. A reason for the retention of the autonomy/independence of Hesse-Darmstadt could have been the family relations of the ruling family with the British and the Russian ruling dynasties. As consequence of the war Hesse-Darmstadt had to pay 3 million guldens at Prussia and accept the annexation of the landgraviate (Landgrafschaft) Homburg, parts of the districts of Gießen, Rödelheim, Niederursel with a total area of 830 qkm and a number of inhabitants of about 47.000. In exchange it received parts of Katzenberg, Nanheim, Reichelsheim, Trais, Dortelweil and Haarheim (about 83 qkm with 12.000 inhabitants). User:saftwuerstel 12:30, 19 Jun 2005
