Its county seat is Trenton, TennesseeGeographic references. == Geography == According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,563 square kilometer (604 square mile). 1,561 km² (603 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water. === Festivals, fairs, and attractions === The Gibson County Fair is held each August in Trenton. The fair is billed as the "oldest continuously running fair in the Southern United States" [http://www.jacksonsun.com/ditlo/gibson_fair.shtml]. The fair has been annually since 1865. == Demographics == As of the censusGeographic references#2 of 2000, there are 48,152 people, 19,518 households, and 13,584 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (80/mi²). There are 21,059 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.66% Race (U.S. census), 19.72% Race (U.S. census) or Race (U.S. census), 0.20% Race (U.S. census), 0.14% Race (U.S. census), 0.02% Race (U.S. census), 0.50% from race (U.S. census), and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Race (U.S. census) or Race (U.S. census) of any race. There are 19,518 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are Marriage living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.93. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,105, and the median income for a family is $39,318. Males have a median income of $30,360 versus $21,351 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,320. 12.80% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line.
