GAIM

Was that GNU AIM or GNOME AIM? I believe it was GNU, but it was dropped because it wasn't an official GNU project. it was originally a GTK+ app without GNOME support, so i don't see how that would fit. (maybe i could ask one of the maintainers) -jrousseau

Gaim

:''For the fictional alien race in Babylon 5, see ''Gaim (Babylon 5)''.'' Gaim is a multi-platform instant messenger that supports many commonly used instant messaging systems including: *AOL Instant Messenger (via OSCAR protocol or TOC protocol protocol) *Gadu-Gadu *ICQ (via OSCAR protocol) *Internet Relay Chat *Jabber (XMPP) *MSN Messenger *Novell Groupwise *OpenNAP *Yahoo! Messenger *Zephyr protocol *SILC (protocol) Previously referred to as "GAIM" (all capitals) or "gAIM" (first letter not capitalized), its official spelling is now either "Gaim" or "gaim". Its name is not to be considered an acronym to clarify that it does not have any affiliation with AOL. The term "instant messenger" and the acronym "AIM" are service marks of AOL Time Warner, so Gaim is not allowed to use them. Gaim is free software available under the GNU General Public License. The current version is Gaim 1.3.1, released June 10, 2005. Originally written by Mark Spencer for Unix-like operating systems, it now runs on a variety of platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, SkyOS and Trolltech Personal Digital Assistant system, Qtopia. Recently, the Gaim developers have started to separate the core code—which handles things such as network connections and messaging—from the Graphical user interface code, which controls how these actions are presented to the user. After the code split is complete, it will be possible to write client programs using a developer's GUI library of choice. The core library produced by the split will be called libgaim; an in-development but stable version of this library is already in use in the Adium and Proteus (instant messenger) clients. ==Features== *Tabbed message windows for easy switching of conversations *Accounts option allows user to log on as many different accounts at once as desired *Transparency support via plugin for conversation and buddy list windows *Aliasing nicknames by real name of user [http://gaim.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php?file=persons.png] *Logging conversations and messages supported [http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q27] *Buddy Pounce feature pops up notifications or plays a sound when a user either logs on/off or changes status [http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q26] Gaim supports plugins for both RSA and GNU Privacy Guard encryption. PhoneGaim is software based on Gaim (and thus also available under the GPL) that uses the Session Initiation Protocol to be able to have voice communication over the internet via VoIP. ==See also== *List of instant messengers *Comparison of instant messengers ==External links== *[http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ Gaim Home Page] *[http://gaim.sourceforge.net/about.php What is Gaim?] *[http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/ Gaim Project Info on Sourceforge.net] *[http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/ Gaim for Qtopia] *[http://gaim-vv.sourceforge.net/ Gaim-vv, a fork of gaim with experimental video/voice support] *[http://www.nidelven-it.no/articles/introduction_to_gaim Introduction to Gaim (Part 1 is specific to Windows)] *[http://webgaim.erichsimmons.com/ WebGaim] AIM clients Free Linux software Free Mac OS software Free Windows software Linux instant messengers Mac OS instant messengers Windows instant messengers IRC clients for Mac OS IRC clients for Unix-like systems IRC clients for Microsoft Windows Jabber clients SourceForge project GNOME

i've noticed people keep putting up screenshots with other peoples screen names in the buddylist. i think this is a privacy issue. either the names should be bogus or aliases should be used to protect the "buddies" of one who takes the screenshot. just my 2 cents ------ You are absolutely right, I hadn't thought about it. I will try to "fix" it. User:Knut 04:29, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC) :Bleah. All those blurred-out user names look really ugly. Can't we just get a screenshot of some Wikipedian with a bunch of other Wikipedians in his or her buddy list? --User:Ardonik.User talk:Ardonik 05:42, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC) ::Indeed. We don't need to resort to blurring out names; just alias the names to something obviously dummy or impossible and there would be no privacy issues and no ugliness :D --User:Gniw 17:57, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC) :::Using fake names as the aliases would definately be a good idea. --User:Evice User talk:Evice Special:Contributions/Evice 16:34, May 13, 2005 (UTC)
