Hello and Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers to Wikipedia! Here are some tips to help you get started: * If you haven't already, please add your name to the Wikipedia:New user log to let others know a little about yourself. * Read the article describing Wikipedia:How to edit a page and feel free to experiment in the Wikipedia:Sandbox. * When editing pages, use the Wikipedia:Show preview before submitting and try to fill in the Wikipedia:Edit summary for every edit. * Eventually, read the Wikipedia:Manual of Style and Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. * If you need Wikipedia:Help, post a question at the Wikipedia:Help desk or ask me on User talk:jrdioko. * Explore, Wikipedia:Be bold in updating pages, and, most importantly, have fun! Good luck!
User:Jrdioko P.S. One last helpful hint. To sign your posts like I did above (on Wikipedia:Talk page, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes). ---- == Aruku Hito == In the article on Jiro Taniguchi, the word "aruto" probably should be "aruku" ("to walk"). However, titles being titles, I can't be sure... :Thanks for the info. I just checked some ressources on the Web, and both I saw titles. I'll guess by your contributions that you are from Japan or at least have a good knowledge of japanese. So go up for your translation. :By the way, can you tell me how to add easily japanese letters ? User:Lvr 09:09, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC) PS: I'm watching this page, so you may want answer right here. I'll see your message. Hi Laurent, The way I add Japanese is using Microsoft's IME. You can download it at no cost from microsoft.com and set it up to appear in the language bar. Then I select Japanese and Hiragana and type. Pressing the spacebar converts hiragana to natural Japanese (a mixture of kanji and kana). Another way to get Japanese is to copy and paste from the Japanese Wikipedia. I hope that helps. Best regards, Frank P.S. Also see Wikipedia:Manual of Style for Japan-related articles ---- == Yatate == I am very impressed by the swiftness with which the kanji were added to the yatate page ! Thank you so much ! (I've also just started the shakudo page, if you're interested ! ;) ). Thank you again ! Rama Thanks --- I enjoyed your two articles and learned from them! == Suberb == Thanks for the spelling fix on Hankyuu. I tend to overlook them. ==Ramen and Chuka Soba== Chuka Soba, from what I think it means from your writing, refers to a varient of Ramen known as ''Gomokusoba'', lit. five ingredients ramen (=soba). Gomokusoba is flavored with spices used in Chinese cuisines and things on top are stir-fried and thickened. It is served in a Chinese restaurant in Japan. It's probably an oddity in a particular restaurant you are familiar with. User:Revth 01:33, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC) ==Osaka Castle== Thank you so much for that Osaka castle pic! Now it is used in the Osaka Castle and Osaka articles! User:WhisperToMe 04:08, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC) ==Volcanoes of Honshu== Thank you for your help with :Category:Volcanoes of Honshu. I spent most of the day restructuring :Category:Volcanoes into a rich extensible hierarchy. ^_^ - User:Gilgamesh 11:28, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC) ==47 Ronin== Thanks for the pointer to the Columbia site - it contains a number of useful items. I was planning on redoing the 47 Ronin page, taking into account the information provided in Hiroaki Sato's book (particularly the account of Okado Denpachirō, who was an official on duty the day Asano attacked Kira, and was present at many of the events of that day), and will include material from the Columbia too. Alas, I can't read Japanese, so I am restricted to sources which have been translated into English. User:Jnc 12:22, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC) : Hi, thanks for the reply. Following up on the Columbia page you posted, I have contacted the author, Prof. Henry Smith, who it turns out I already had several books by! He is quite a scholar of the Ronin, and has given me a great deal of very useful information about them - which sources are best, etc. He is sending me a number of papers, etc, and I have ordered some books he recommended. Once I have assembled all this material, I will re-write the page to remove the inaccuracies. User:Jnc 14:14, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC) ==Shingo, Aomori== You are the main author of the above article, so I'm dropping a note here. I have just reverted a long POV rant which was quoted in the article. It was placed there by 219.43.110.1 on Sept 3. Besides being POV, the quotation overwhelmed the article, indeed it became the article. Yet obviously something more is needed about this tomb, either here or in its own article. Accordingly I've added two external links to the page. The links are just to the first reasonable discussions I found on the matter and there may be better ones. I did not add a link to the site from which the quotation was taken as I don't think it as helpful as the ones I did link to. User:Jallan 19:21, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC) ==Tokyo== We could do that. New York City has similar lists. User:WhisperToMe 04:46, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC) ==Onomichi== Well spotted! Turns out that despite the name Jodo-ji is not the HQ of the Jodo sect, but one of the Shingon subsects instead. Duly corrected. User:Jpatokal 11:20, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC) == VHF Omni Range == I noticed you redirectd my article on "VHF Onmi Range" to "VHF Omni Range". Sorry, (how embarrasing). However, this this article needs to be redirected or deleted. My mistake, a page on VOR (all caps) already existed but I found an unrelated article searching for "vor". User:Rsduhamel 03:35, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC) ---- ==Route 128 Station== Is this deleted article available on the web so I can take a peek? User:Thortful 08:23, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC) == Japanese actors == You added to :Category:Japanese actors and actresses and :Category:Japanese actors. Do you have an opinion as to which should be merged into which? - User:Dcljr 18:49, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC) == Train Station Deletion == Hey, thanks for letting me know about the deletion of Route 128 station. Actually, as someone who has used that station many a time, I don't think it was a particularly well-written article. There was a lot that could be talked about (they just recently rebuilt the entire station from a stray platform to a very expensive new station). To me, the information seemed like it was all pulled raw from [www.mbta.com the MBTA] and re-organised. It was not a good article for deletion, but for re-organisation and expansion. But if someone comes near my articles, I'll cut 'em! :) Páll here by the way, nice to meet you in the Wikipediaverse. User:PZFUN 04:51, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC) ==Poll== I have created a preliminary version of Wikipedia:VfD decisions not backed by current policies/poll. Your comments would be much appreciated. - User:SimonP 17:08, Oct 23, 2004 (UTC) ==Bikini Atoll== Thanks for correcting my spelling on the Bikini atomic experiments page. I appreciate it. And thanks for the information about the Japanese boat; I didn't know that a third party group had been exposed to radiation. User:TomStar81 01:26, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC) ==Kyoto== I wasn't aware of any trend in Japanese city names, but standard Wikipedia convention is to use the simplest and most common name, unless there is a specific reason (eg, disambiguation) to do otherwise. I'm aware that US cities are often an exception, but that was by special agreement — I haven't noticed such an agreement for Japan, and can't find any mention of one at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city names) or its associated talk pages. (The only mention I can find of Kyoto, Kyoto is a brief comment by another user calling it "ridiculous"). Is there a place where this has been discussed? And if so, what is the reason given for departing from Wikipedia convention? -- User:Vardion 22:10, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC) ==Commons== Thanks for the tip about Wikimedia Commons. I had no idea. - User:Nat KrauseUser_Talk:Nat Krause 10:11, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC) == :Image:Sengakuji.jpg == Hey there, could you possible provide :Image:Sengakuji.jpg with an Wikipedia:Image copyright tags? It is required if the article is to beecome a Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates#Forty-seven_Ronin. * Done. While there, I made a couple more changes that (I hope) will survive the upcoming edit. After watching five or six ''Chushinguras'' this month, I hope this article becomes featured! --Fg2 On another note, I was looking through your photo album, great work! I was wondering, could you provide larger resolution versions of the following images, shot by you: {| |- | | | |- |} I would really like to Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates for Wikipedia:Featured pictures, but the resolution of all your images is just a tad too low. In general, when uploading images, do not spare the Wikipedia disk space :) You can upload the highest resolution version you have, although it is a good idea to apply some resizing and JPEG compression (at least 80 quality) to get image size under 1 MB. Cheers, User:Solitude\User_talk:Solitude">User:Solitude|User:Solitude\User_talk:Solitude 10:52, Nov 18, 2004 (UTC) *Thanks for the compliment! Unfortunately, those photos are in the huge, unorganized boxes that I've recently combed through twice, so I can't be sure how soon they'll surface again. Still, I'll keep my eyes open for them, and if they appear, I'll definitely put up big scans. --Fg2 == Dual licensing of photos? == Your photos of Japan are excellent — could you consider dual licensing them under Creative_Commons_License, so they could be used at Wikitravel as well? Here's a [http://wikitravel.org/en/article/Wikitravel:Why_Wikitravel_isn%27t_GFDL link] to a short rationale. User:Jpatokal 04:24, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC) *Thanks for the compliment! All now PD. --Fg2 **Thank you! Please pay a visit to [http://wikitravel.org Wikitravel] and see if you could spot some nice gaps to fill. **Also, does dual-licensing/PD apply to your maps also? The CC-SA box on your user page currently covers only ''text'' contributions. User:Jpatokal 11:49, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC) ***I'll be glad to make the maps PD. Probably tomorrow. I contribute all the subway maps I made to the public domain. User:Fg2 12:18, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC) ****Done. User:Fg2 04:40, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC) ==The Humungous Image Tagging Project== Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for ''at at'' and ''the the'', non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --User:Tagishsimon User_talk:Tagishsimon == Article Licensing == Hi, I've User:rambot#Free the Rambot Articles project to get users to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (''CC-by-sa'') v1.0 and v2.0 Creative Commons Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The ''CC-by-sa'' license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the Wikipedia:List_of_Wikipedians_by_number_of_edits Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at ''minimum'' those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information: *User talk:Ram-Man#Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered *Wikipedia:Multi-licensing *User:rambot#Free the Rambot Articles project To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "" template into their user page, but there are other options at Wikipedia:Template messages/User namespace#Licensing Templates. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page: :Option 1 :I agree to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below: : OR :Option 2 :I agree to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below: : Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "" with "". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. ''Please let me know'' what you think at my User talk:Ram-Man. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- User:Ram-Man ([http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit§ion=new comment]| User talk:Ram-Man *Done. I basically wrote what I did to say that it was introduced under the current emperor. I was a bit young in 1989 to have much concern about politics, much less a country I didn't know much about then. ^^;; -- User:Emperorbma|User talk:Emperorbma 23:58, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC) == Matsudaira Teru == Fg2, I just completed a major rewrite of Matsudaira Teru (moved article from Matsudaira Teruko based upon the references I used). It seems I was doing the rewrite while you were correcting a misspelling I probably introduced. Sorry for the trouble. m__m I would really appreciate your input, because you've also been working on the article. (BTW, I restored the external links you added. I accidentally erased them during an edit) Thanks, User:Atsi Otani 17:25, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC) == City => City, Prefecture == As noted in Talk:Nagasaki, Nagasaki, I've changed the proposal the other way round for Hiroshima & Kyoto -- User:KTC 02:40, 2 May 2005 (UTC) == EWbu Railways and Nambu Line == I've explained Seibu too. Mission complete. User:Soredewa 10:49, 2005 May 2 (UTC) ==Kigo== Than you for the compliment on the Kigo article. That leaf picture looks very nice, but it probably should be cropped so that is still recognizable in the thumbnail view in the article. I would like to find one picture per season. I'd love to find a good picture of some people in colorful costumes doing odori dancing during the Bon Festival, for example. It would great to find a good flea market picture too. The Univ. of California has a couple of good websites on native plants that I think are all public domain photos, so I'll also look to see if I can find some good wildflower pictures. If you have any suggestions, feel free to suggest them. User:BlankVerse User talk:BlankVerse 12:16, 3 May 2005 (UTC) :Thanx for the cropped leaf picture. It looks great. :re:Tanabata: What I had in my mind's eye is what I've seen at some the Japanese festivals here in the Los Angeles area—everybody in colorful Japanese costumes doing a sort of walking line-dance, usually in a big circle. User:BlankVerse User talk:BlankVerse 06:00, 5 May 2005 (UTC) re:Lotus: I was thoroughly confused for awhile after I followed the Lotus link and then started doing some more checking. I was thinking that the lotus used for kigo was the sacred lotus plant of Hinduism and Buddhism (genus Nelumbo), but there is also a genus Lotus (genus) with this interestingly named variation Lotus corniculatus var.japonicus (see this link for a picture [http://www.kix.or.jp/~yoshida/spring/miya_g.htm]). Before I had done that checking, I was all set to ask the guy who took the picture at this link if he would license it under the GFDL to be used by the Wikipedia, because to me it looks like a lotus flower you might write a haiku about [http://www.dam.brown.edu/people/glin/SEA-SFO/MonteRainer/Lotus_Flower.JPG]. Then the WHC World Kigo Database says that rengesoo 蓮華草 (milk vetch) is sometimes incorrectly translated as "lotus flower" [http://worldkigodatabase.blogspot.com/2005/06/flower-and-hana.html]. Next from my internet search is [http://www.geocities.com/meister_z/HAIKSZNS.htm] Lotus flower (Byakuren, Hasu no hana) summer kigo, Lotus digging (Hasuhori) and Withered lotus (Kare hasu) winter kigo. And from THE FIVE HUNDRED ESSENTIAL JAPANESE SEASON WORDS [http://renku.home.att.net/500ESWd.html] lotus (hasu, late summer). The plant, tattered lotus (yarehasu, late autumn). withered lotus (karehasu, all winter). And one more internet source [http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/japanese/haiku/saijiki/4wi.html] 枯蓮 【かれはす】 kare-hasu, withered lotus(es) (all winter). 蓮枯る 【はすかる】 hasu karu, lotuses wither / lotus withers Finally, I plug in "lotus hasu" into the Google Image Search [http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=mozclient&scoring=d&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=lotus+hasu] to find out that it was your type of lotus all along. ;-) After all of that, I guess that I need to change to Lotus wikilink from the disambiguation page to the correct Lotus page.
