Element

The term element can refer to: * Chemical element — material that consists of atoms with the same number of protons in the nucleus (see also Periodic table). * Classical element — in ancient times believed to be the realm wherein all matter in the universe existed and whereof all matter consisted. Also used for ritual purposes by the religion of Wicca. * Five Elements — held by China Taoism to be the basis of the universe. * Electrical element — any device (such as an inductor, resistor, capacitor, Conductor (material), line (electrical engineering), or cathode ray tube) with terminals at which it may be connected directly with other devices. It can also mean an Antenna (electronics) radiator (either parasitic or active). In circuitry, it can be used to specify a portion of an integrated circuit that contributes directly to the IC's operation. * Element (mathematics) — a member of a set or class (set theory). * '''''Euclid's Elements'' — a mathematical treatise on geometry by Euclid. * The Elements (song) — a song by Tom Lehrer about the chemical elements. * Element Skateboards — a skateboard manufacturer endorsing professional skaters. * Honda Element — a sport utility vehicle. The term is also used as terminology in: * Morse code, where the dot and dash are \"elements\". * XML''', where an "element" is a particular kind of grammatical fragment of a document. ==See also== * elemental (disambiguation) ga:Dúil la:Elementum simple:Element vi:Nguy%C3%AAn t%E1%BB%91

The burdensome appearance of classical element (''classical element'') looks very redundant. --User:Quester 08:22, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

This template is intended to make coding of infoboxes in :Category:Chemical elements articles easier. ::NOTE: The template has not been fully tested and may go through several changes before it is ready for routine use. It should not be used on main namespace articles until it has been tested and released, which will be specifically noted on this talk page. In the mean time, testing may be performed on individual users' personal pages. == Instructions on how to use the template == When using the template, one must forward the element properties as variables to the template. The variables have names such as Element_name, Chemical_symbol, etc. Most of the variable names are immediately visible on the template page, but for a full overview of variables and their use, #Overview of variables. One example of using the template is given at User:Eddideigel/Fantasticum. This example includes, among other things: The variables may be defined in any order inside the template brackets. Empty space may be used to align text, but this is not important. Variables that are unknown, or just not filled in yet, should be defined as blank to avoid too much garbage in the output. There are a few potholes, including Ionization_potential (may be difficult in case of multiple potentials), and Isotope_table (may be difficult to fill in, but the result looks good when filled in properly). For further details see below. == Overview of variables == The first letters of text based variables should be capital letters, except where the example indicates that small letters should be used. {| border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=0 style="margin-left: 0.5em;" ! See the code example for exemplicum #Instructions on how to use the template. |} == Instructions for use of colors == The colors in the following table are used as background colors for chemical elements in the periodic table and in the articles about the individual elements. The colors are defined through templates named in the form Template:Element/Chemical_series/Color . Inside the element template where the chemical series is known as the variable Chemical_series , the value of the colors will appear by using the code #{{Element/{}/Color}} . In other contexts where there is no such variable, one just enters the name of the chemical series and use for example the code # . The colors may be used in the following ways: * As text color: Example text * As background color: Example text The code tag span is just an example. One may use similar styles in the definition of e.g. table cells as HTML

== Discussion == I thought there should be a single template for :Category:Chemical elements, and so I made this one from several others. (They were called Template:Chemical element infobox begin, Template:Chemical element infobok entry, etc.) For testing of the template, see User:Eddideigel/Fantasticum. Comments and suggestions are very welcome. --User:Eddideigel User talk:Eddideigel 02:39, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC) Today some changes were made to the template, mainly to render it easier to use: * the background colour of titles is computed from the name of the chemical series, and the file names of table images (periodic table locator and appearance) are computed from the chemical symbol and atomic number, so the colour and file names are not needed as template arguments; * the scale of molar volume changed from m³/mol to cm³/mol because most molar volumes – all except the gases – are in the cubic centimetre range, and the scale of electrical conductivity changed from S/m to MS/m because most conductivities – for all metals – are in the megasiemens range; * fahrenheit is included along with kelvin and celsius for melting points and boiling points. A few other, minor changes were also made. --User:Eddideigel User talk:Eddideigel 22:27, 7 May 2005 (UTC) Chemical elements
