Egaleo (Αιγάλεω) is a city in Attica, Greece. It belongs to the West Athens territory. It is near the cities: Athens, Peristeri, Chaidari, Agia Varvara, Agios Ioannis Rentis, Tavros, Nikea. After 1922 the main population were refugees from Turkey. The first name of Egaleo was "Nees Kidonies". Today its population is about 120,000. The most of its citizens are workers. Its Football (soccer) club is one of the most successful in Greece. About 1/4 of its area is full with factories. The air pollution is very problematic due to the factories and traffic. The mayor of Egaleo is Dimitris Kalogeropoulos. He elected under the New Democracy Party in 2002. "Egaleo" is also the name of the monthly newspaper of this city since 1985.
