
Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) refers to the oscillatory variation of the absorption of X-rays as a function of energy beyond an absorption edge. By tuning in the energy of the incident X-ray source to coincide with the absorption edge of a specific element, structural information about that element can be obtained. EXAFS gives information about the immediate environment around the absorbing atoms out to ~ 6 Å. Data which can be extracted includes the number, type, and distance of neighbouring atoms.
