Duke of BrabantThe title Duke of Brabant was created when the counts of Leuven acquired the Duke of Lower Lorraine after the death of Godfrey of Bouillon. "Their claim to ducal office arrived more obviously through wives of eleventh-century counts of Louvain: Lambert I’s wife Gerberge, a daughter of Duke Charles; and Lambert II’s wife Oda, a daughter of Duke Gozelo" [http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/d/c/dcj121/prosop/counts/countyA/county27.htm]. From Henry I onwards, as the importance of Lower Lorraine fell, the counts of Leuven started to name themselves after Brabant, the region in which Leuven is located. In 1288, the dukes of Brabant became also Duchy of Limburg. The title fell to the Duke of Burgundy in 1430, and from then on passed with the rest of the Burgundian inheritance until the French Revolution, although a large part of the territory of Brabant was actually governed by the United Provinces in the 17th and 18th century (see Generality Lands). == House of Leuven == * Godfrey I, Duke of Brabant (1095-1139) * Godfrey II, Duke of Brabant (1139-1142) * Godfrey III, Duke of Brabant (1142-1190) * Henry I, Duke of Brabant (1190-1235) * Henry II, Duke of Brabant (1235-1248) * Henry III, Duke of Brabant (1248-1261) * Henry IV, Duke of Brabant (1261-1267) * John I, Duke of Brabant (1267-1294) * John II, Duke of Brabant (1294-1312) * John III, Duke of Brabant (1312-1355) * Joan, Duchess of Brabant (1355-1406) == House of Valois == * Anthony, Duke of Brabant (1406-1415) * John IV, Duke of Brabant (1415-1427) * Philip of St. Pol (1427-1430) * Philip III, Duke of Burgundy (1430-1467) * Charles, Duke of Burgundy (1467-1477) * Mary of Burgundy (1477-1482) == House of Habsburg == * Maximilian_I%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor (regent, 1482-1494) * Philip I of Castile (1494-1506) * Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (1506-1555) * Philip II of Spain (1555-1598) In modern times, the title Duke of Brabant is held by the crown prince of Belgium. * Leopold II of Belgium (1840-1865) * Leopold, son of Leopold II (1865-1869) * Leopold III of Belgium (1909-1934) * Baudouin of Belgium (1934-1950) * Philippe, Crown Prince of Belgium (1993- ) See also: Dukes of Brabant family tree ==External link== *[http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/d/c/dcj121/prosop/counts/countyA/county27.htm Counts of Louvain]: genealogical note History of the Netherlands History of Belgium Dukes of Brabant See other meanings of words starting from letter: DDA | DB | DC | DE | DF | DG | DH | DI | DJ | DK | DL | DM | DN | DO | DP | DR | DS | DT | DU | DW | DX | DY | DZ |Words begining with Duke_of_Brabant: Duke_of_Brabant
