==Lumens (luminous flux) versus Lux (illuminance)== The Lux is the SI unit of illuminance. An older customary unit of illuminance, the footcandle, is still used in the United States, in building codes, for example. Since footcandles and lux are both measuring the same thing—illuminance—they can be converted to each other. Specifically, one footcandle = 10.76 lux, and one lux = .0929 footcandles. One lux is one lumen ''per square meter.'' It differs from the lumen in that it takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread. 1000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square meter, lights up that square meter with an illuminance of 1000 lux. The same 1000 lumens, spread out over ten square meters, produce a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux. Light can be spread out or concentrated in various ways. In one simple case, suppose we have a light source that shines in every direction with an equal luminous intensity. A bare light bulb, with no shades or reflectors, approximates such a source, as does a "standard candle." If we imagine such a source at the center of a small room, the total area of the walls, ceiling, and floor is small, and the lumens per square meter
