Doves

:''For the type of bird, see dove'' Doves is a British indie rock band from Manchester, England. The band is known for its large, epic sound, and has been compared with contemporaries such as Radiohead as well as classic Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, New Order and The Smiths. The three members of Doves are brothers Jez Williams (guitar) and Andy Williams (drums and occasional vocals), and Jimi Goodwin (vocals, bass and occasionally drums), who met at school when they were 15. They formed a Madchester-influenced dance music collective called Sub Sub, which had moderate success in the early 1990s, including the hit single ''Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)'', but the trio gradually moved in a more rock music direction. This transition may have been hastened by the destruction of their studio in a fire. The band regrouped, changed their name, and three EPs followed in 1998 and 1999, which established the group's new sound and met with a warm critical response. Their debut album ''Lost Souls'' (2000) was received with rapturous critical acclaim, and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, which they lost to fellow Mancunian Badly Drawn Boy, for whom they had previously acted as an occasional backing band. Their second album ''The Last Broadcast'' was released two years later, reached #1 in the UK album chart and was also nominated for the Mercury prize. This record contained the epic track "There Goes the Fear", which reached #3 in the UK singles chart despite only being released for one day before it was deleted. in 2003, they released a b-sides compilation, ''Lost Sides'', and a DVD. Their next record, ''Some Cities'', was released in early 2005. The band is currently touring to promote the album. ==Discography== Chart positions listed are for the UK. ===Studio Albums=== *''Lost Souls'' (2000) - album; #14 *''The Last Broadcast'' (2002) - album; #1 *''Lost Sides'' (2003) - b-side compilation *''Some Cities'' (2005) - album; #1 ===EPs=== *''Cedar'' (1998) - EP *''Sea'' (1999) - EP *''Here It Comes'' (1999) - EP ===Singles=== *"The Cedar Room" (2000) - single; #33 *"Catch the Sun" (2000) - single; #32 *"Man Who Told Everything" (2000) - single; #33 *"There Goes the Fear" (2002) - single; #3 *"Pounding" (2002) - single; #21 *"Caught By The River" (2002) - single; #29 *"Black And White Town" (2005) - single; #6 *"Snowden (single)" (2005) - single; #17 ===Lives and DVDs=== *''Where We're Calling From'' (2003) - DVD ==See Also== * The Music ==External links== *[http://www.doves.net Doves official band site] British musical groups Rock music groups Alternative musical groups Heavenly Records artists
