DhamapadaIn Buddhism, according to the legend, when King Narasimhadeva decided to build the Konark temple to fulfil the dream of his mother, he invited twelve hundred artists from all corners of Orissa to build it. It was to be built on the shores of the Lake Chandravaga (The original lake is extinct now). However, the foundation stones were constantly swept away by the tides of Chandravaga. He appointed his prime minister to solve this problem. The legend says that after spending many unfruitful nights in the attempt to solve this problem, the prime minister was finally illuminated by a very old woman whose chance remark revealed a simple solution. Led by Bishu Maharana, it took twelve years for the artists to build this temple, at the end of which, everything was complete except for the ''dadhinauti'' (set at the top of the temple). All their efforts to set it was unsuccessful due to the tricky position of the temple in relation to the lake (It was built absolutely next to the lake). Finally, the impatient king issued the order that if the temple was not completed before his visit to the temple on a certain day, all the artists would be beheaded. When Bishu Maharana left home, his wife was pregnant. Shortly after his departure, she gave birth to a son named Dharmapada, who turned out to be a child prodigy and perhaps more brilliant than his father at sculpture. Once, when the twelve-year-old Dharmapada was laughed at by his playmates about not having a father, he questioned his mother about it, who told him all about his great father. Dharmapada set out in a journey to meet his father and visit the famous temple his father was building. However, when he finally met his father, his father wasn't as happy as he had expected him to be. The very next day all the artists were going to be punished for their futile attempts to set the ''dadhinauti'', and a glorious tradition of stunning art of sculptures was coming to an end, as all the leading artists had been working on this temple by royal orders. Then, in an attempt to save all those lives, Dharmapada managed to set the ''dadhinauti'' and thus complete the temple. Then it became a question of time before the king knew the truth behind the completion of the temple and decided to behead all the artists in spite of his previous orders. Confronted by his fellow artists, Bishu Maharana was compelled to sacrifice the life of his own son whom he had met only a few hours earlier. But it was Dharmapada, and not Bishu Maharana, who made the decision and decided to die to save the lives of twelve hundred men. Once again in the history of mankind, the genius was sacrificed to save the mediocre. As the sun was rising on the next day, Dharmapada climbed the temple and jumped into the lake before the rays could touch the idol inside. Buddhism DhamapadaHow to change the title of this page.
