I added a comment on the talk:Wind page. There is a passage in the Wind article that I think is muddled. Please have a look. I wrote most of the current article on the coriolis effect. In writing the coriolis effect explanation, I aimed as much as possible to facillitate understanding of wind dynamics. Possibly the current coriolis effect article is a bit to much in-depth for a wikipedia article, but it's really cool physics, so I went ahead anyway. --User:Cleon Teunissen | User talk:Cleon_Teunissen 20:24, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC) Hi Denni, I discovered I may have had a wrong definition of geostrophic wind in mind. Currently, I'm relying on the information on the following site: [http://vortex.plymouth.edu/winds/webpage/winds.html Balanced flow tutorial by Ryan Turkington] Also it appears that different meteorologists use different definitions of coriolis force, so the reader must check out the mathematical formulas to infer which version of coriolis force is in use. --User:Cleon Teunissen | User talk:Cleon_Teunissen 14:04, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC) :I wish I could provide you my sources for the geostropic wind component of the wind article, but it's been some time since I wrote it, and I have no idea where I got the information (save that it was from a reliable source). Please do not hesitate to make corrections as you see fit. One of the great things about Wikipedia is that you can fine-tune the work of others, and if you find the explanation I provided muddled, I will not be offended if you can improve it. User:Denni 21:54, 2005 Mar 14 (UTC) I will edit the section on synoptic winds. My background is physics, so the physics of what I write will be correct, but I may be unaware of certain conventions or definitions in meteorology. Your source must use rather idiosyncratic definitions. In physics centripetal force is the centerdirected force that maintains circular motion. In (roughly) circular airflows around a low pressure area the pressure gradient force provides the centripetal force that is necessary to maintain the circular motion. In all three: geostrophic, gradient and cyclostrophic wind it is the pressure gradient force that provides the centripetal force.
I'm unsure what to make of 'long straght isobars'. For linear motion of air you need the situation that the force is at an angle with respect to the direction of motion. The isobar would have to move sideways as fast as the velocity of the wind. --User:Cleon Teunissen | User talk:Cleon_Teunissen 11:53, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC) Hi Denni, That photo would look good on the Canadair CL-215 page. Could it be shrunk a bit, eight MBytes as it is. User:Meggar 05:24, 2005 Mar 16 (UTC) == long straight isobars == ...are what would occur on a non-rotating sphere, as my source has it (and which makes sense to me). User:Denni 23:46, 2005 Mar 15 (UTC) :I think that in the case of isobars it is not helpful to refer to what would occur on a non-rotating sphere. In the case of very small circular currents, like dust devils and somewhat larger, where influence of the coriolis effect is negligable, the rotation of Earth is unnoticable. But above a certain size range the direction of the circular flow is determined by the coriolis effect, illustrating that above that size range the atmospheric dynamics of a rotating and a non-rotating sphere are incomparable. :William M Connolley wrote on the Talk:wind page that the geostrophic approximaton is applicable only when the isobars are parallel to latitude circles. Usually, he writes, the contributors coriolis effect and centrifugal force must both be taken into account, (but the two cannot simply be added, I infer that a weighed average of the two must be used). :Anyway, William has reverted my changes, arguing that the dynamics was being discussed too much in-depth for the scope of the article, and I decided to go along with that. It leaves an editorial dilemma, I think. Should it be mentioned at all that meteorologists take both coriolis effect and centrifugal force into account? What does that information add if it's not explained to the reader how different these forces are? As William wrote, currently the sections 'synoptic wind' and 'winds defined by an equilibrium' overlap in what they present. Maybe the two sections should be merged. --User:Cleon Teunissen | User talk:Cleon_Teunissen 09:55, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC) == I didn't edit 138, but... == I wasn't the person who inserted my VfD "pseudo-humor" into 138 (number). I just wanted to let you know what my plans are for the Peer Review... I intend to finish going through and rewriting all of the LR article, with a fairly high level of detail. It will take a bit more time than I originally thought. The only problem is that this will probably swing the pendulum too far the other way, and the article will grow too large. My intention is that once I finish with LR, I will spin off bits that don't seem directly relevant to LR to Red River Rebellion and North-West Rebellion, and try and bring these articles to a higher standard as well. User:JamesTeterenko has also agreed to work on really buffing out the trial section, and much of this will eventually be spun off to Trial of Louis Riel. I just wanted to know that I think I have more-or-less accomplished what I aimed to do with Louis Riel during the peer review. The size is now back down to about 41kb after ballooning to 50+ when I was writing the RRR section. So when you have a chance, please give it a careful once-over, and consider whether you would like to renominate it for FAC. Of course, there is still room for improvement - the Trial of Louis Riel sub-article is unfinished, and North-West Rebellion is still in woeful shape. But one article at a time! Red River Rebellion I think I can get to near FAC status in a couple more days, I just need to rewrite the lead paragraph, add a couple of things here and there, and merge back some information from the old article that existed there before I moved so much stuff there from Louis Riel. Plus, this author has written in The Nation so we can hope he's not a flake. By the way, the main source for my edit was the [http://www.hotpotatomedia.com/mpgs/100404cb.mp3|Carol Brightman MP3]. Very informative. User:WpZurp 03:12, 28 May 2005 (UTC) ==00Axx== Hi, why do you want to keep 00Axx as a redirect? User:Jnc User_talk:Jnc 23:04, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC) : Well, I was actually interested if you had some actual use for it, i.e. a reason past general "why not keep it?" Also, the page was listed at WP:RfD, and one can't unilaterally remove the listing from WP:RfD. I will put the correct {rfd} tag on it, and we'll see whether people want to delete it. User:Jnc User_talk:Jnc 16:04, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC) ==Most Wanted== Hey, sorry about the edit conflict, I try to put "Currently Editing" on the recent changes articles, so it won't happen. I was just cleaning up and wikifying abit.. User:WhoUser talk:Who 04:39, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC) ==Why, oh why?== does your link to posting a question lead to another page than this one? Are you a multi-named one? But my real question is the one I posted on the other page, to which I did not get a response. Why did you remove the delete notice on my redundant Roti Canai article? I have corrected the bad link that led me to creating it, no one else has edited it yet, I have the information saved to put on the ''good'' article page, and Cyrius can't be serious if he thinks anyone is actually going to learn something from my idiocy. Please respond. The article is like a flea in my ear, which, if you've experienced this, is maddening. --User:Mothperson 11:45, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC) : I was following advice from the help desk. I had idiotically not followed through on a red non-link for Roti Canai, when there was a perfectly wonderful Roti canai article. I'm sort of new here (March) and I didn't realize article names were case-sensitive. So, because there was a red non-link for Roti Canai in the Breakfast article I've been editing, I assumed, stupidly, that there was no article, and I started one. Can this be put back on the speedy delete, given what I've told you? --User:Mothperson 00:58, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) ::Bless you. The flea has vacated the premises. --User:Mothperson 01:07, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Eric Bina == Eric Bina DOES live in Champaign, IL. How do I know this? Professor Marianne Winslett, Eric Bina's wife, is my doctoral advisor, and I happened to be in their house several times recently. So, the information is NOT stale. Thanks. --User:Ragib 02:44, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Billings Mustangs == You had speedy deleted this as a "duplicate article"—I think this was a mistake as I can find no such duplicate (neither from links in relevant articles or in categories), so I have undeleted it. Please point out to me where the duplicate is and I shall happily re-delete it. User:Postdlf 21:18, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Jewellery Quarter == Hi Deni, thanks for editing my article on jewellery quarter, I like the history run down, is there any chance you can do the same to the pen history but keep the rellevant bits on the main page, it really took me ages to write and although not perfect I wrote it for the jewellery quarter, it does however fit in nicely onto dip pen page as well. cheers User:Nick Boulevard 23:45, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Pic of the day == Hi Denni, Just to let you know that your photo :Image:Bluesky2.jpg is due to make a reappearance as Pic of the Day on 26th June. I've reused the same caption as last time, but you can make any changes at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/June 26, 2005. -- User:Solipsist 08:11, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC) ==Burido== Hello, Denni. You marked Burido as a hoax. It seems the same author has been adding related information to [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Mrdie|a number of articles]. The newly-created account User:Hikato claims the information is verified in "A Brief History of Chinese and Japanese Civilizations" by Conrad Schirokauer, a book that is used as a college textbook. I was wondering if you could point me to somewhere this has been discussed and determined a hoax. If it is a hoax, then it is likely the other contributions are as well. Thank you. User:SWAdair | User talk:SWAdair 06:24, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC) == Tiamat (Planet) == Hello, I just wanted to let you know I that I set up a deletion discussion for Tiamat (Planet) Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Tiamat (Planet). You had marked it as a speedy for nonsense, but since it doesn't meet the definition of Wikipedia:Patent nonsense in the deletion policy, I believe it requires a vote. -User:Satori 02:23, Jun 17, 2005 (UTC) ==Jiro Minami== I wanted to just stop by and thank you for contributing to the article on Jiro Minami. == Elite Clone Shocktroopers == Could you please provide a valid reason for speedy deletion, or put this on VFD instead? While badly written, I don't think it is particularly speediable. - User:MacGyverMagic|User talk:MacGyverMagic 12:38, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC) ==Re: Speedy delete== I agree. I need to keep Doug Llewelyn's words in mind: don't speedy delete, take them to WP:VFD. (I'm keeping an eye on Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Reducing VfD load.) — User:Fingers-of-Pyrex 03:59, 2005 Jun 23 (UTC)
