Delayed onset muscle soreness

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 74 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days. Once thought to be caused by Lactic acid buildup, we now know that it is caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibres caused by Eccentric (Sport) movements, or unaccustomed training levels. To lessen pain after exercise thorough warming up is required. Warmer muscles are more flexible and less prone to damage. == See Also == * 'Recommendations for the avoidance of Delayed Onset Muscular Soreness,' Strength and Conditioning Journal, Vol 23 (4) 7-13 * http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/injuries/a/doms.htm * http://www.physsportsmed.com/issues/1999/01_99/muscle.htm * http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/1077-muscle-soreness.htm Exercise

This report could be of interest. [http://www.diva-portal.org/umu/reports/abstract.xsql?dbid=105 From Swedish University]. User:138.227.189.8 11:27, 24 May 2005 (UTC) :Interesting. And the only reason I came to check up on this article was because my legs are hurting from suddenly doing barbell squats with heavy poundage after a two-month hiatus. Anyway, if I get the article correctly, DOMS is caused by reconstruction of sarcomeres and myofibrils in the fibers. Anyone wish to consider adding this into the article?
