Defunct companiesThis category is for companies that were once significant, but are now defunct. Some were driven out of business by competitors. Some simply stopped operation. Some went bankrupt. Some were willingly sold to other companies, or bought in a hostile takeover. Note that some companies may continue to operate under their old name but as a subsidiary of a parent company. Those companies are categorized as :Category:Subsidiary companies. Companies Defunct companiesUser:Netoholic has proposed that we move articles on still-active companies that have been bought out by other companies and become subsidiaries over into :Category:Subsidiary companies. I think this is a pretty good solution, as it avoids the inconguency of some fairly dynamic ongoing business units being categorized as "defunct." However, it's a fair piece of work, since there are a number of articles in this condition to be moved, so I wanted to ensure there was a consensus on it before we got started. --User:Gary D 18:53, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC) *Actually, I am now of the mind that the distinction is remarkably non-relevant. It seems to be categorization for its own sake. Who really is going to click on that :Category:Subsidiary companies link at the bottom, and what useful information does it serve?
