Death rock

Deathrock, also known as Death punk, is a term used to identify an offshoot of 1970s punk rock subculture in America. Despite similar genre names, Deathrock has very little in common with death metal. Deathrock should also not be confused with shock rock. Deathrock is often compared with the early Gothic rock/Gothic punk scene in the United Kingdom, both acoustically and aesthetically. The Romanticism of Gothic rock is characteristic of Deathrock, though the scene draws heavily from punk subculture, horror movies, Gothic literature and Gothic artwork. The influence of punk and fascination with horror aids in distinguishing death rock from Gothic rock, though some death rock bands do not incorporate horror or traditional punk ethic into their style. Generally speaking, death rock first appeared on the American West Coast of the United States in the late 1970s, particularly in Los Angeles with bands such as Voodoo Church, Burning Image, 45 Grave and Christian Death. The style soon emerged in other cities across the United States (and the world) in the early to mid 1980s. It is important to recognize that no single country, city, scene or band is solely responsible for this subculture. As the modern goth scene drifts further away from its punk roots with electronic body music, techno, fetishism, shock rock and nu metal, many new punk-influenced goth bands have (and continue) to appear in the underground as a reaction to this trend. Cinema Strange, Bloody Dead and Sexy, The Brides, and Bella Morte are relatively popular examples of modern deathrock bands. ==Lists of Deathrock Bands== *List of musicians of Deathrock, Classic *List_of_musicians_of_Deathrock%2C_Modern ==Related Genres== *Gothic Rock *Horror punk *Punk *Post-punk *Psychobilly *Gothabilly *Dark Western *Dark Indie *Batcave *New Wave ==Subcultural Fashion== *Death rock fashion *Punk fashion *Gothic fashion ==Web Zines== *[http://www.deathrock.com/ Deathrock.com] *[http://nydecay.com NY Decay] *[http://www.starvox.net Starvox] *[http://www.deathrock.net/ Deathrock.net] ==Articles== *[http://www.starvox.net/crypt/dr/dr.htm Reanimation of the Deathrock Scene] on Starvox.net ==Deathrock Festivals== *http://dropdeadfestival.com Drop Dead Festival: Annual music festival featuring Deathrock, Horror Punk, Post-punk, Psychobilly and related genres. ==Club Nights== *http://nydecay.com NY Decay Productions: Deathrock, Psychobilly and Punk Nights in and around NYC & PA *http://www.releasethebats.info Release the Bats, Long Beach, CA Punk American styles of music Rock music genres Goth Death rock

== Elaborate on the etymology of "deathrock" == Was this word used in songs back then, how did it first come into use? Rozz was said to have uttered this word once, and Danzig used it in a Misfits song too. Were there other examples? From what I've learned few people called this music "deathrock" back then - it was just punk rock to them. This would make an interesting addition to our Wiki entry. So, would someone who was around back then (Katz are you reading this?) be willing to write a paragraph on the etymology of the word "deathrock"? == List of bands by Genre == Wiki has a nice collection of bands listed by Genre here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musicians I copied and pasted the list of bands from this article to a Deathrock page, and seperated bands by Classic and Modern. I move that we remove the list of bands from this Deathrock article and instead provide a link to the above page & list. Seconds? :Sounds good to me User:Lyo 19:47, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC) == Inclusion of 'Deathrock friendly' bands == I question the band list. Should earlier British and worldwide bands with a 'death rock friendly' (for want of a better word) sound, but who were contemporaries with (if not indeed predecessors of) the early death rock scene but not part of it, be included here? Should they be retroactively assimilated into a genre/movement? I'm thinking specifically about listing such as the Virgin Prunes, the Birthday Party, Sex Gang Children, etc. I don't believe any of these would have thought of themselves as 'death rock' bands, because that wasn't a term in currency in their respective scenes. Or we can simply state that the list includes similar music even if the band wasn't 'death rock' per se, but was a similar 'post-punk' sound? User:Morven 20:48, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC) :I was about to say pretty much the same thing - including the Birthday Party and Sex Gang Children here is retconning at best. Criteria for inclusion: 1. Clearly part of the US death rock scene as descended from LA in the late seventies; 2. self-labelled; 3. ''maybe'' notable common categorisation (on the level of listing the Sisters of Mercy as goth). I don't have time, but an article tweak and recategorisation is needed. :NB: there's an increasing number of goth bands labeling themselves death rock instead - e.g. the stuff Nik Ransom puts on at Dead & Buried in London of late (Devilish Presley, Zombina and the Skeletones, etc) - User:David Gerard 23:53, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)
