Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia!
In MediaWiki:VfD-Kosmicheskaya Militsiya you mentioned a Russian friend. What exactly did he say? Has he actually ''seen'' the show, do you think? How reliable would you say his information is?
This is not to hassle you. I'm interested to find out. But it may well help to decide the page's fate. User:Andrewa 18:17, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hello DO'Neil!
I have two questions concerning the image :Image:Birdparadise111.jpeg: (1) There is no additional information on the origin of this image. Probably it is your own photo? If yes, do you have a higher resolution version. I would like to use it in :de:Paradiesvögel in the German Wikipedia. (2) I am not sure, if your determination of the bird is correct. I think it is Raggiana Bird-of-paradise (''P. raggiana''), not Greater Bird-of-paradise (''Paradisaea apoda''). Best wishes --User:Franz Xaver 17:18, 14 May 2004 (UTC)
:Thanks for your answer. Now I think the image may not be used in Wikipedia at all. I have found a website with this image, which might have been your source: [http://www.pngembassy.org/special.html] and there is a copyrigth notice. Probably the image must be deleted, as well as :Image:Wilsonbirdparadise.jpeg which probably is from [http://data.acnatsci.org/vireo/paradise/paradise.html]. Best wishes --User:Franz Xaver 19:17, 18 May 2004 (UTC)
:Whoops, I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out; they probably should be deleted. User:DO'Neil 21:01, 18 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi, DO'Neil,
Not objecting to your edits on the Pius VI article, but the old version wasn't taken from a foreign language; it was lifted from the 1911 Britannica. Complete with the typos in the scanned version that's on the Web, such as Galilean for Gallican (fixed a while ago). Some stuffy old prose there, to be sure. User:Dandrake 19:38, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

==Tenochtitlan==
Wow! Lots of changes to Tenochtitlán. Actually, by doing so, you've come down very hard on the side of the ''hispanistas'' vs. the ''indigenistas'' with respect to the pronunciation of those names (Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan in particular -- I suppose you have to start somewhere). In recent years there's been something of a movement in Mexico to reclaim the more authentic Nahuatl pronunciation with the accent on the penultimate rather than the (Castilianified) last syllable. For the two sides of the debate, take a look (on the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua website) at what Miguel León-Portilla (indigenista) says [http://www.academia.org.mx/Consultas/021100.htm here] and how Yáñez (hispanista) rebukes him in the last para. It's been a long while since I've heard anyone pronounce it 'Tenochtitlán', but maybe that's just the company I keep.
Dunno. Perhaps you were aware of all that already and wanted to come down heavily on that side. FYI just in case you didn't. User:Hajor 14:32, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that "Tenochtitlán" was viewed as Castilianified. Interesting. However, I'm not preferring that spelling out of any sort of racism (I have nothing against Nahuatl speakers, and why should I?), but from what I've read in books, Tenochtitlán is more common in English. I've seen Teotihuacan a few times, though. User:DO'Neil 06:33, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)
And the problem is, when you see them without an accent in English, you're never quite sure whether they're doing it out of conviction or because of house style (or ignorance) whereby accent marks are omitted. Presumably most serious books will be taking their cue from Spanish publications and, if this is a movement, it'll take some time to filter through into English. User:Hajor 14:02, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Why did you move Mikhail Frunze to his name including his patronymic? Do you see Vladimir Putin at Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin? User:Everyking 07:55, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
:Also Pavlik Morozov. User:Everyking 08:03, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
::On #wikipedia we decided that patronymics should be used in titles. Others from the period (Lev Borisovich Kamenev, Grigory Yevseyevich Zinoviev and Aleksandr Vasilevich Kolchak, for example) have their patronymics in their article names. Do you suggest that I should change them back to first name - last name? User:DO'Neil 08:23, Jun 19, 2004 (UTC)
:::It certainly makes more sense to me to title articles according to the most common and basic form of the name. Do you intend to move Putin as well, and Yeltsin, Gorbachev, etc.? I think that would look absurd. User:Everyking 09:01, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
::::Hmm. I will move them back to first name - last name, along with Lev Borisovich Kamenev, Grigory Yevseyevich Zinoviev and Aleksandr Vasilevich Kolchak. It's inconsistent to have Vladimir Putin and Pavlik Trofimovich Morozov, you're right. User:DO'Neil 09:11, Jun 19, 2004 (UTC)

Please limit the use of the technical limitations link to cases where the MediaWiki software (not just it's current English language Wikipedia configuration) prevents the use of a particular title. You can generally test to see whether it is a software limitation by trying to create the page at test.wikipedia.org. Limitations of policy (like use English for page names) or of configuration (UTF8 support at en wikipedia is currently partial) aren't software limitations. User:Jamesday 21:24, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

== Article Licensing ==
Hi, I've started the User:rambot which has the goals of getting users to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all of their contributions that they've made to...
#...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
#...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (''CC-by-sa'') version 1.0 and 2.0 Creative Commons Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The ''CC-by-sa'' license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Wikipedia:Multi-licensing for more information). Since you are among the Wikipedia:List_of_Wikipedians_by_number_of_edits most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at ''minimum'' those on the geographic articles.
:Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the template (or for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Wikipedia:Template messages/User namespace#Licensing Templates. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
:Option 1
:I agree to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
:OR
:Option 2
:I agree to Wikipedia:Multi-licensing all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
:
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace with . If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. ''Please let me know'' at my User talk:Ram-Man what you think. -- User:Ram-Man 17:58, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

I've seen the edits that you've made to some of the articles I've written. I always check out the person who edits anything related to me and I checked you out. I'm really impressed with your ideals and with the fact that you are facinated with Latin-American topics. I have dedicated all of my energy to the topic of Puerto Rico, which is my specialty. Since you're Irish, I was wondering if you would be interested in writting about the Irish migration to Puerto Rico in the mid 1800's. The Spanish government fearing an uprising from the native Puerto Ricans, encouraged the people of Ireland and Corsica (That's where my descendents came from) to migrate to the island, hopeing that they would be loyal to the Spanish Crown. Even though they adopted the language and the culture, they kept their surnames: O'Neil, Cole, McKintock, Garrity etc. By the way, my grandaughter is half-Irish. So, what do you say? User:Marine 69-71

Hi DO'Neil - Italian aircraft are sadly a bit neglected here, so thanks for adding another two! :Also, I just created Piaggio P.108 (another Italian bomber!). I used the table because I wasn't sure what to do, I can change it to something else if that would be preferable. User:DO'Neil'''User talk:DO'Neil'''User:DO'Neil 10:05, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
::The main argument against the table was that it's harder for new editors to work with. Furthermore, they were/are vulnerable to changes in the Wiki software - if you take a look around, you'll see plenty of aircraft articles with data tables now in a font that's too small to easily read - this happened because the table was designed before Wikipedia's last "facelift". Finally, a couple of WikiProject Aircraft participants (the prime movers behind the changeover) argued strenuously for text-based specifications on aesthetic grounds. To see an example of the new format implemented for a WWII bomber, take a look at Petlyakov Pe-8. Cheers --User:Rlandmann 22:45, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
