It is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and found naturally in fish. It is reported to have nootropic effects, although research on this chemical has found both positive and negative potential results. It is believed that DMAE is methylated to choline in the brain. It is known that DMAE is processed by the liver into choline; however, the choline molecule is too large to easily pass the blood-brain barrier. Short term studies show an increase in vigilance and alertness, with a positive influence on mood. As for long term studies, the evidence seemed to differ. Some showed DMAE to increase the lifespan of animals in which it was tested, while others indicate a possible reduction in the life span of quail. With the uncertainty of whether this could be extrapolated to humans, DMAE supplementation is therefore still not generally recommended. It is possible dosage is a major factor as a determinant in DMAE's overall effects -- i.e., a high dosage could produce opposite effects than sought and contribute to life-shortening. ==Studies== *Earliest research *:Pfeiffer C, et al. DMAE

Personally I find DMAE's effects to be a placebo. I took it for about a week and noticed nothing except the worst exhaustion of my life at bedtime and an easier time getting up in the morning. == NPOV check == While a great, fascinating, thorough article could be written on DMAE, the existing stub is biased in favor of DMAE supplementation. The only source cited for any of the claims (such as "drinkers will especially find DMAE helpful") is a site that sells DMAE supplements. While I'm not necessarily opposed to linking to that site (it does provide some information), it's obviously sketchy to use it as the only source. --User:LostLeviathan 08:05, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC) User:Ceyockey 04:33, 2005 Mar 2 (UTC) == wikification request == User:Ceyockey 04:34, 2005 Mar 2 (UTC) Wikified, i removed the tag so as to remove this page from "Articles that need to be wikified" category.
