DC Animated Universe

The DCAU or DC Animated Universe is a general term coined by fans of the animated television series based off of DC Comics, usually heavily developed by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. ==What's in the DCAU?== It has been heavily debated by many fans, but it usually refers to the following television shows, which are generally in continuity with eachother: * ''Batman: The Animated Series'' (later renamed ''The Adventures of Batman and Robin'') * ''Superman: The Animated Series'' * ''Batman: Gotham Knights'' (also known as ''The New Batman Adventures'') * ''The New Batman/Superman Adventures'' * ''Batman Beyond'' * ''Justice League (animated series)'' * ''Justice League Unlimited'' It should be noted that ''The New Batman Adventures'' is commonly considered to be part of ''Batman: The Animated Series''. Likewise, the first season of ''Justice League Unlimited'' is often considered to be the third season of ''Justice League''. The ''The New Batman/Superman Adventures'' was usually an hour show that had a ''Batman: The Animated Series'' episode and a ''Superman: The Animated Series'' episode a half-hour each. Superman and Batman often teamed up after their two shows were merged together. The term has also included the four Batman movies that have spun-off from the above shows: * ''Batman: Mask of the Phantasm'' * ''Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero'' * ''Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker'' * ''Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman'' The term has also been loosely used to include other shows, but not always because of differences in style, continuity, or creative teams. * ''The Zeta Project'', a ''Batman Beyond'' spinoff * ''Static Shock'' * ''Teen Titans (animated series)'' * ''The Batman (TV series)'' Also notable are the Macromedia Flash web-cartoons commonly seen on DC Websites like ''[http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/gothamgirls/index.jsp Gotham Girls]'' and a cartoon based off the DC anti-hero Lobo (comics). Many of the shows mentioned above also had comic spin-offs meant to follow the continiuty of the above shows specifically, unlike the regular DC Comics, like the ''Batman Adventures'', the ''Superman Adventures'' and the ''Justice League Adventures''. ==Problems with the grouping== The decision of fans to group the above shows together has drawn criticism from other fans and even the creative teams of the very shows. ===Continuity=== While a generally consistant continuity has existed in the shows over the years, there has still been some inconsistancies, due to the fact that it wasn't expected back in 1992 that the universe that the characters live in would still be elaborated on as of 2005. Initially, when the ''Justice League'' series began, fans were asked to ignore a ''Superman'' episode where Green Lantern Kyle Rayner guest starred, since a different version of Green Lantern (John Stewart) was used in ''Justice League''. However, in a later episode of Justice League, it was implied that both Kyle Rayner and John Stewart existed in the continuity. Other minor problems, like references to Wonder Woman in ''Superman'' before she introduced herself in the first episode of ''Justice League'', were still seen. Fans have chosen to either ignore such problems or create their own explanations for them. ===Creative Advantages and Problems=== Even in an 2005 episode of ''Justice League Unlimited'', events that occurred as early as the first episode of ''Batman: The Animated Series'' were mentioned and taken into account. Some have criticized such references as cheap fanservicing. Others say they didn't hinder the enjoyment of a new episode for new viewers while provides long-time viewers a sense of satisfaction. A major example of continuity references would be a two-part episode of ''Justice League Unlimited'' where Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern chase a criminal through time and into the future, where they meet the future Batman, as seen in ''Batman Beyond'' and a future Static (superhero), first seen in a ''Static Shock'' episode that also involved time-traveling to the future. Some have considerred Static's appearance in ''JLU'' as a pointless nod to continuity even though the character was originally a Milestone Media character, not a DC superhero. Others found new revelations based on long-forgetten characters like Warhawk rewarding or interesting. ==External Links== [http://wf.toonzone.net/main.php World's Finest], a fansite devoted to many of the above shows Animated television series DC Comics Television programs based on DC Comics
