This may be, but it's not exactly NPOV. ---- I actually don't mind living in Corvallis, even if there's nothing to do. It's a nice place. Does anyone know if those population statistics include OSU students? User:Quickbeam I'm pretty sure it does. To be honest that number is larger than what I would expect. Originally called Marysville, probably for the nearby Mary's River, the state legislature changed the city's name to Corvallis in 1853, from the Latin phrase ''cor vallis'', meaning "heart of the valley." As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 49,322. It is the county seat of Benton County, Oregon. Corvallis was incorporated as a city in 1857. Located in Corvallis are Oregon State University, located quite close to the main downtown area, and a large Hewlett-Packard computer printer cartridge manufacturing and prototyping facility which is a major local employer. A number of residents also commute to work in Albany, Oregon. == Geography == Corvallis is located at 44°34'15" North, 123°16'34" West (44.570780, -123.275998). It is about 85 miles south of Portland, Oregon, ten miles west of Interstate 5, and 30 miles south of the state capital, Salem, Oregon. By car, the travel time is about an hour and a half from Portland, and 45 minutes (44 miles) north of Eugene, Oregon / Springfield, Oregon, taking either I-5 or Oregon Highway 99. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.7 square kilometre (13.8 square mile). 35.2 km² (13.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.23% water. == Demographics == As of the census of 2000, there are 49,322 people, 19,630 households, and 9,972 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,400.2/km² (3,625.6/mi²). There are 20,909 housing units at an average density of 593.6/km² (1,537.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.03% White (U.S. Census), 1.16% African American (U.S. Census) or Race (U.S. Census), 0.76% Native American (U.S. Census), 6.42% Asian (U.S. Census), 0.29% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census), 2.52% from Race (U.S. Census), and 2.82% from two or more races. 5.72% of the population are Hispanic American or Latino (U.S. Census) of any race. There are 19,630 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are Marriage living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.2% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 17.7% under the age of 18, 28.4% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $35,236, and the median income for a family is $53,208. Males have a median income of $40,770 versus $29,390 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,317. 20.6% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line.
