Consumer Protection#REDIRECT Consumer protection Consumer Protection#REDIRECT Talk:Consumer protection Consumer protectionConsumer protection is government regulation to protect the interests of consumers, for example by requiring businesses to disclose detailed information about products, particularly in areas where safety or public health is an issue, such as food. Consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights (that consumers have various rights as consumers), and to consumer organizations which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace. ==Consumer law== ''Consumer protection law'' or ''consumer law'' is considered an area of public law that regulates private law relationships between individual consumers and the businesses that sell them goods and services. Consumer protection covers a wide range of topics including but not necessarily limited to product liability, privacy rights, unfair business practices, fraud, misrepresentation, and other consumer/business interactions. Such laws deal with bankruptcy, credit repair, debt repair, product safety, service contracts, bill collector regulation, pricing, utility turnoffs, consolidation and much more. In the United States there are a variety of laws on the federal or state levels that deal with consumer affairs including the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Truth in Lending Act, Fair Billing Act, and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and much more. Federal consumer protection laws are usually enforced by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice. At the state level, many states have a Department of Consumer Affairs devoted to regulating certain industries and protecting consumers who regularly use goods and services from those industries. In the UK, consumer laws are enforced by Trading Standards [http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/]. In New Zealand, it is the Ministry of Consumer Affairs [http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz]. In Australia it is the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission or the individual State Consumer Affairs agencies. ==See also== *Antitrust *Consumers' Association, UK advocacy group, publishers of ''Which?'' *Consumers' Federation of Australia - advocacy group. *Consumers International International NGO *Consumers Union, United States advocacy group, publishers of ''Consumers Reports'' *Consumerium - a wiki project to empower consumers *Ralph Nader - consumer activist *Michael Vernon - consumer activist Law Consumer protectionIs it right to put in a link to (what seems to be) somebody trying to sell their services to people who need credit repair (or something similar)? http://www.creditwrench.com This web site isn't bad, but surely there's some non-profit whose page is just as informative. - Rootbeer 2002-04-04 Sorry about that but try as you might you will not find any such websites as is suggested. The simple reason is that you simply will not find anyone willing to spend more than 50 years of their lifetime gaining the knowledge and and experience necessary to teach what is taught on that website and then just give it away. To do so would almost require an attorney who worked in the collections field all his life and then upon his retirement spend the rest of his life undoing what he had done all his working life. Most state consumer agency pages will have useful information on how to access your credit information, and how to "repair" your credit through straightforward steps. Most folks with their financial information at hand can handle this themselves. Many of the government agencies can provide help and advice, forms and contacts. Only those with devastating credit problems should seek professional advice - most likely an attorney specializing in bankruptcy and credit "workouts".
