Computer Hardware#REDIRECT Computer hardware Computer hardwareHardware comprises all of the physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the data it contains or operates on, and the software that provides instructions for the hardware to accomplish tasks. The boundary between hardware and software is slightly blurry—firmware is software that is "built-in" to the hardware, but such firmware is usually the province of computer programmers and computer engineers in any case and not an issue that computer users need to concern themselves with. A typical computer (personal computer, PC) consists of a desktop or tower case (chassis) and the following parts: * Motherboard which holds the Central processing unit, Random Access Memory and other parts, and has slots for expansion cards ** random Access Memory (Random Access Memory)- for program execution and short term data-storage, so the computer doesn't have to take the time to access the hard drive to find something. More RAM can contibute to a faster PC ** Buses : *** Peripheral Component Interconnect bus *** PCI Express bus *** Industry_Standard_Architecture bus (outdated) *** Universal Serial Bus *** Accelerated Graphics Port * power supply - a case that holds a transformer, voltage control and fan * storage controllers, of Integrated Drive Electronics, SCSI or other type, that control hard disk, floppy disk, CD-ROM and other drives; the controllers sit directly on the motherboard (on-board) or on expansion cards * graphics card that produces the output for the computer display * computer bus controllers (parallel port, serial port, Universal Serial Bus, Firewire) to connect the computer to external peripheral devices such as computer printers or image scanner * Some type of a removable Computer storage writer: ** CD - the most common type of removable media, cheap but fragile. *** CD-ROM *** CD-RW *** CD-R ** DVD *** DVD-ROM *** DVD-RW *** DVD-R *** DVD-RAM *** DVD plus RW *** DVD plus R ** Floppy disk ** Tape Drive - mainly for backup and long-term storage * Internal storage - keeps data inside the computer for later use. ** Hard disk - for medium-term storage of data. ** Disk array controller * Sound card - translates signals from the system board into analog voltage levels, and has terminals to plug in speakers. * Computer networks - to connect the computer to the Internet and/or other computers ** Modem - for dial-up connections ** Network card - for DSL/Cable internet, and/or connecting to other computers. * Other peripherals In addition, hardware can include external components of a computer system. The following are either standard or very common. * Input ** Computer keyboard ** Pointing devices *** Computer mouse *** Trackball ** Joystick ** Gamepad ** Image scanner ** Webcam * Output ** Computer printer ** Speakers ** Computer monitor * Networking ** Modem ** Network card == See also == *E-waste *Computer architecture *legacy system *Open hardware *optical computer *DNA computer *History of computing hardware *List of computer term etymologies == External links == * [http://www.themodwiki.org TheModWiki.org] * [http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?Hardware DebianWiki: Hardware] * [http://www.corelimits.com Your source for computer news and reviews!] * [http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/ Computer Hardware Directory @ dmoz] * [http://www.elook.org/computing/hardware.htm Definition of hardware at eLook Computing Reference] * [http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/H/hardware.html Definition of Computer hardware @ Webopedia] * [http://www.tech-forums.net Computer Discussion Forums] Computer hardware Digital electronics ms:Perkakas komputer th:ฮาร์ดแวร์ vi:Phần cứng Computer hardwareThis is quite a long article but I am tempted to mark it as a stub as it has lots of links and not many words. It would be nice to have some holistic explanation of how all these bits work but maybe that's somewhere else? --user talk:BozMoUser:BozMo 13:44, 14 May 2004 (UTC) == editing == How can I add a device in the input/output section? I don't see all the parts listed when I click on "edit" Computer hardwareHardware is a comprehensive term for all of the physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the data it contains or operates on, and the software that provides instructions for the hardware to accomplish tasks. A closely related category is Digital circuit. The boundary between hardware and software is slightly blurry — firmware is software that is "built-in" to the hardware, but such firmware is usually the province of computer programmers and computer engineers.
