Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus

The Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus is a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church and its Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. Located in the outskirts of downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, it serves as an auxiliary to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. It was named in honor of Saint Theresa of Lisieux. The original church parish was established in 1931 by Stephen Alencastre, Bishop and apostolic vicar. Construction was completed only a year later, in September 1932. Reflecting the exponential growth of Catholicism in the immediate community, Vicar General Benedict M. Vierra led a major fundraising effort to replace the church's wooden structure, showing signs of deterioration in 1956. Vierra's efforts were successful and the renovated church was dedicated on August 15, 1963. Having found a need to split the main downtown parish of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace into smaller areas of reach, Joseph Anthony Ferrario, Roman Catholic Bishop of Honolulu, petitioned Pope John Paul II in 1984 for the consecration of a co-cathedral. A papal decree was issued from the Apostolic Palace elevating Saint Theresa Catholic Church to become a co-cathedral. Ferrario renamed the church and its interior was reconfigured. A cathedra, most commonly known by older Roman Catholics as the throne of the bishop from which he preaches, was placed in the church. The Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus is most often used for the annual Chrism in which the holy olive oil and balsam oils used in several of the sacraments are consecrated by the bishop before being distributed to the parishes of the diocese. The Holy Orders is also most often celebrated at the co-cathedral. == Resources == * [http://catholichawaii.com/parish/st_theresa/ Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus] * [http://cathedralofourladyofpeace.com/ Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace] * [http://www.catholichawaii.com/ Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu] * [http://reference.allrefer.com/encyclopedia/T/TheresaL.html/ Saint Theresa of Lisieux] Hawaiian architecture Roman Catholic cathedrals of the United States Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu Roman Catholic churches in the United States

Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus

* St. Theresa of the Child Jesus is named after Teresa of Avila under a nuanced name. --User:Keevan Daley 22:25, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC) * And please prevent from linking long, involved formal honorifics — for example the monsignor's name. --User:Keevan Daley 22:29, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC) * Keevan, in deference to the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council's Decree on Bishops (''Christus Dominus''), I have deleted the term ''throne.'' * Keevan, as to your first point above, I respectfully disagree for the following reasons: (1) I live in Honolulu and attend the Co-Cathedral's services on a regular basis; (2) I was present at the dedicatory ceremonies when the church was elevated to the dignity of Co-Cathedral; (3) The ''Ordo'' (Order of Prayer for the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist) for the metropolitan province of San Francisco, that includes the diocese of Honolulu, lists the patronal feast day of the Cathedral as that for Saint Theresa of Lisieux, aka, Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, aka Therèse Martin of Alçenon, recently proclaimed as ''Doctor of the Church'' by Pope John Paul II in 1997; (4) the main stained-glass window in the choir loft depicts the Little Flower, patroness of the missions dropping a shower of roses on the earth. Please see http://reference.allrefer.com/encyclopedia/T/TheresaL.html. I will respectfully make the necessary edits.
