CKAC

CKAC is a radio station based in Montreal, Quebec. It is famous for being the first French language radio station in the world. It broadcasts at 730 on the AM radio dial. In recent years, the station's future has been uncertain due to the constant decline of AM radio. Astral Media, CKAC's owner, had been looking for prospective buyers of its AM network since shortly after becoming its full proprietor in 2002. A bid by the media arm of Quebecor was blocked by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Canada's broadcasting regulatory body, over concentration issues in 2003. A consortium later offered to buy the station but withdrew its offer. In 2004, Corus Entertainment offered to buy CKAC and other Astral AM stations for $11 million and a string of FM stations. Corus, which already owns a talk radio station on the FM dial, planned to turn CKAC into a sports and health station and dismantle the station's highly regarded newsroom. The CRTC approved the transaction in January 2005 on the condition that Corus provide more local programming than it had first planned. The purchase went ahead despite criticism by media watchdogs who said the Corus takeover meant condemning CKAC to irrelevance and to a slow death. An appeal to the Canadian government to stop the deal in April 2005 proved unsuccessful. The station's newsroom officially closed at noon, May 30, 2005. Montreal media Radio stations in Quebec
