It is an affiliate of CTV Television Network. The station was established in 1954 by Sunwapta Broadcasting as a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation affiliate. On October 1, 1961, the CBC established CBXT in the city, and CFRN became one of the original CTV affiliates. In 1988, the station was acquired by Electrohome, whose broadcast assets were subsequently bought out by Baton Broadcasting in 1996.
