Bremen

Bremen [ˈbreːmən] is a city in northern Germany (official name: Freie Hansestadt Bremen#Footnotes, referring to its membership in the medieval Hanseatic League) situated along the Weser River, at . Bremen is one of two towns belonging to the States of Germany of Bremen (state), the other being Bremerhaven. Population: 547,000. ==History == In the 8th century the troops of Charlemagne advanced to the Weser in order to christianise the tribes settling here. Bremen, which may have been an older settlement, became a bishopric#Footnotes; a deed claiming the town's foundation in 788 has now been recognised as a forgery, so the exact date is unknown. In the following centuries the bishops of Bremen were the driving force behind the Christianisation of Scandinavia. In the 12th century the power of the archbishops was challenged by Henry the Lion. The duke was successful and became the factual ruler of the town. These events led to a civil government and a loss of clerical power. Bremen became a merchants' town, and its ships dominated the southern portions of the North Sea. This dominance ended, when the Hanseatic League, originally a trade alliance of the Baltic Sea only, expanded to the North Sea. In the early 14th century ships from Bremen acted as pirates to board hanseatic cogs. In order to avoid open war aldermen from Bremen went to the Hanseatic Council in Lübeck and agreed to becoming members of the league (1358)#Footnotes. Bremen remained a reluctant member of the Hanseatic League. The town demanded support for its wars against the chieftains of Frisia, who ruled the region around the Weser mouth, but they seldom joined campaigns in the Baltic Sea. In 1425 the conflict escalated, when the citizens burnt hanseatic documents on the market place. Bremen was expelled from the league in 1427. The consequences followed soon: the sudden loss of power led to territorial claims of neighbouring states (e.g. Oldenburg) and significant territorial losses. {| align=right | |- | |- | |- | |- | |} In 1620 Germany's first man-made Harbor was built at Vegesack. #Footnotes On March 6, 1901 an assassin attempted to kill Wilhelm II of Germany here. After World War II, Bremen became a part of the American occupation zone since the United States wanted to have one port town within their zone. This prevented the inclusion of Bremen into the new Land of Lower Saxony that was formed around it within the British zone, and secured Bremian independence as a Land of its own right in the new West Germany. === Historical population === :1810: 35,800 inhabitants :1830: 43,700 :1850: 55,100 :1880: 111,900 :1900: 161,200 :1925: 295,000 :1998: 550,000 #Footnotes == Sights == * Town (built 1410 #Footnotes); in front of the town hall there are the statues of Roland (1404) and of the Town Musicians of Bremen (1953). * Cathedral St. Petri (13th century), with sculptures of Moses and David, Saint Peter and Paul of Tarsus, and Charlemagne. * Liebfrauenkirche, oldest church of the town (11th century) * Martinikirche (St. Martin), church on the Weser bank (1229) * Schütting (1538), house of the merchants' guild * Schnoor, a medieval quarter with narrow streets and nostalgic pubs * Schlachte, the medieval harbour of Bremen (the modern port is some kilometres downstream) Modern tourist attractions include * ''Universum Science Center'', a modern science museum * ''botanika'', an extension to a public park that attempts to the same as above ''Universum'' for biology * ''Beck's Beer Factory'', tours are available to the public which include beer tasting * The Space Center opened in 2004 inside the Space Park in the Gröpelingen district and closed on 2004 26 September, since then a remarkable investment ruin. == Constructions == * Mediumwave transmitter Bremen * Fallturm Bremen * Telecommunication Tower Bremen == Miscellaneous == Bremen has a large and famous University of Bremen founded in 1971 #Footnotes, and more recently the International University Bremen, and several high-tech industries have settled in the city. Concerning the "SpacePark" deletion today, I would like to take note of it since it not being dismantled; supposedly, there will be a re-opening in the near future using a new concept. You're off to a rolling start! Thanks so much. Couple of suggestions in general: *Wikipedia convention uses sentence case in headings, not title case (e.g., use Dog articles, not Dog Articles). *I think just "Health" is more to the point than "Health issues" as a heading--after all, we could also call the others "Temperament issues", "Appearance issues"... :-). Besides, you'll find that some articles talk about the breed's good health and general longevity in that section, not merely about bad things. *If you sign your posts on the talk pages, it'll be easier for people to see who said 'em without having to go to the history page. Just takes some getting used to. User:Elf | User talk:Elf 01:30, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC) BTW, you're doing great so far and it's a delight to have someone new with energy tackle the dog stuff. Hope you're taking all my suggestions & comments & edits in an educational light, not a critical one. User:Elf | User talk:Elf 03:08, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC) === Thanks for your work! === * Halló Bremen! I could see your changes at Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Dog breeds. Some time ago I ===More thanks=== You're still doing a great job. I actually dared to try changing the order & subheads in an article and found myself wondering "Am I doing it how Bremen would do it?" :-) Hey, thought i'd put a plug in for a couple more tweaks once you get past the "Go..." dog breeds in List of dog breeds; I take a stab at these periodically but just don't always have time for it. If you don't want to, that's fine, but figured it didn't hurt to mention: * Change occurrences of , , or any other stub to . * Change the AKC breed link to the new correct link on the AKC site. It looks like maybe they actually finally put in their own redirects from the old page names to the new page names, but I think it's smart to try to fix them all to the correct URLs. The new current URLs all end in something like '''''breedname''/index.cfg; the old ones end in something like ''breedabbrev''.cfg'''. Easiest way to fix is have a window open to [http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm AKC's complete breed list], click on the breed, and capture the URL from the browser. (Some of the FSS/rare breeds are listed separately at the end of the page.) User:Elf | User talk:Elf 06:24, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC) ==Ottoman Map== *What is the copyright status of the Ottoman map you uploaded for the History of the Balkans article? -User:Litefantastic 17:50, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC) Hi Bremen. Generally speaking, most images available on the internet are NOT considered to be legally in the public domain (almost no images or photographs created after the 1920s generally are). Sometimes we use copyrighted material under the fair use clause but generally we try not to do that -- it should only be used for situations in which there are no alternatives. Usually images are in the public domain ONLY if they have been released into it by their authors (generally rare outside of Wikipedians), if they are too old for a copyright (usually pre-1923, I think), or if they have been created by a source which means it cannot be copyrighted (any work by the US federal government, for example). If you look at Wikipedia:Copyright it goes into a little more detail. In the case of this map, it is likely not in the public domain -- it looks like it is scanned out of a modern textbook. In this case, the best approach might be to ask someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps if they could re-create the map using some of our map templates we have (I am sure someone there would be glad to do it -- it would not be a lot of work technically speaking and would look quite professional if done well). Another approach to seeing the varieties of "free" images are to look at the options at Wikipedia:Image tags. --User:Fastfission 03:44, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC) **Ok thanks for all the input. I guess we can't keep that particular map then huh? I'll ask someone at the map project to look at in a few days.User:Bremen 17:25, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC) == CCOTW == == English Shepherd == I don't agree with your changes to the [English Shepherd] page. The introductory section of an article tries to distinguish the topic of the article from other similar things. In this case it tries to distinguish the English Shepherd from other breeds. Since the English Shepherd breed is not familiar to most people I believe that it is important to clearly distinguish it from other similar, related breeds. That is the purpose of the text you moved/removed, to distinguish the English Shepherd from other similar breeds. Of necessity any introductory material will be redundant with respect to the main body of the article. If all material is moved from the introduction to the appropriate section of the article, then there is nothing left in the intoduction. It is always important to give the reader a context on which to hang the information in the rest of the article. IMHO the best way to give the reader context on the English Shepherd is to compare and contrast with the very similar Border Collie and Australian Shepherd. I would like for you to revert your changes or to find some way to compare and contast the ES with the BC and AS in the introduction. I was satisfied with the introduction as written so my response would be to revert it. Since you were dissatisfied I thought it would be better to contact you and see if we could reach a mutually satisfactory solution. User:Dsurber 03:05, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC) :Thanks. I like that better. User:Elf | User talk:Elf 06:35, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC) =WWII enemy action in North America= Hi, I read that you had restored the following statement to the Bell Island, Newfoundland and Labrador article: "Bell Island was the only location in North America to have seen enemy action during the war." Bell Island may have been the only location in close proximity to Newfoundland's landmass which saw enemy action (ie. the U-boat attack on the iron ore ships in Conception Bay), but it was not the only location in all of North America to witness enemy action. The U-boat campaign along the Atlantic coast was mostly conducted off-shore from U.S. ports, however the Battle of the St. Lawrence saw dozens of ships sunk by U-boats in waters just as close to shore as the 1942 Bell Island attack. There are numerous cases of ships at anchor, or underway (such as the SS ''Caribou''), in the Cabot Strait, along the Gaspé Peninsula and off Halifax and Sydney (Nova Scotia) harbours which were attacked by U-boats. There are also at least 2 documented cases of U-boats dropping spies/sabateurs on the coastlines of Chaleur Bay and the Bay of Fundy. Additionally, a Japanese submarine actually performed the only naval shore bombardment of North America by an axis vessel when a Canadian lighthouse on the British Columbia coast was shelled. Had you intended the sentence to read "Newfoundland" instead of "North America"?
