Bracebridge HeathBracebridge Heath is a commuter village approximately 4km (2.5 miles) south of Lincoln, Lincolnshire. It lies at the junction of two Roman Road - Ermine Street (the modern A15), and Grantham Road (the modern A607), and is part of Boothby Graffoe Wapentake. The village also sits on top of the Lincoln Cliff, overlooking Lincoln, Lincolnshire and the valley of the River Witham. == History == According to ''Whites 1876 Lincolnshire'', the parish of 1438 acres (5.8 km²) consisted of the (on Sleaford Road), All Saints church, and a vicarage. According to Whites, the notable persons living in this Parish of 340 persons at the time (1876) were: *Thomas Allen, MD (at the Asylum) *William Andrew, Solicitor *Rev William Bromehead BA, vicar *William Coupland, Blacksmith and Beerhouse *William Green, Blacksmith *George Kirkup, Asylum Steward *William Mills, Wards Brickyard *Edward Palmer, MD, Asylum Superintendent *George Wheatley, Carpenter *Charles White, Pattern and Clog Maker *John Wollfit, Licensed Victualler, The John Bull *Thomas Butler, Farmer *Charles Clarke, Farmer *Edwin Scrivener, Farmer *William Toulson, Farmer *Mrs Mary Winn, Post and Carrier from Lincoln == Modern Bracebridge Heath == Bracebridge Heath has obviously changed dramatically since Whites' description of 1876. The village boundary is now much extended south in the direction of Lincoln and north towards the nearby village of Waddington (property prices increased dramatically during the period 2000-2005 as the village benefited from its close proximity to RAF Waddington). The 'Asylum' (St John's Mental Hospital, Bracebridge Heath) closed down in 1990 and was sold a few years later to a property developer who has constructed nearly 1000 new houses in the village. The original hospital buildings themselves are classified as Grade III listed building, and are therefore protected from demolition. During the redevelopment of the hospital site, a number of these protected buildings were refurbished and converted into flats and offices. Modern Bracebridge Heath has three public house. 'The Blacksmiths Arms' on the site of the blacksmithy run by William Coupland at the point where London Road forks into Sleaford Road (A15) and Grantham Road (A607). Opposite 'The Blacksmiths', on the western side of Grantham Road is its companion public house, the 'John Bull'. The last of the trio, 'The Homestead', is a relatively recent addition built in the late 1990s on the nearby former hospital site. The village also has a small primary school on London Road, and a small number of local shops, including a supermarket, chemist, butcher and newsagent. == External Links == Villages in Lincolnshire See other meanings of words starting from letter: BBA | BC | BD | BE | BF | BG | BH | BI | BJ | BK | BL | BM | BN | BO | BP | BR | BS | BT | BU | BW | BX | BY | BZ |Words begining with Bracebridge_Heath: Bracebridge_Heath
