BoMis#REDIRECT Bomis BomisBomis (pronunciation to rhyme with "Thomas") is a dot-com company founded in 1996. Its primary business is the sale of advert on the Bomis.com search portal, and it also sells erotica over the Internet. The majority owner of Bomis is Jimmy Wales, and it has never had venture capital. Minority stakeholders include Tim Shell and one silent partner. Bomis is most notable for founding the online encyclopedia project Nupedia, and hiring Larry Sanger to manage it. During the early stages of this project, Sanger began the development of Wikipedia, which was originally intended as a sub-project and drafting platform for the more formally organised Nupedia. However, Wikipedia, with its much lower barrier to entry, rapidly outgrew its "parent", and soon became far larger than the main business of Bomis itself. For a while, Bomis not only provided web servers and bandwidth for these projects, but owned some key items such as the associated domain names. However, with ever-rising costs, and a general reluctance to display advertising on the site - together with a desire to reflect the spirit of openness and neutrality central to Wikipedia - an alternative ownership model was sought. The Wikimedia Foundation was formally announced on June 20, 2003, and all related assets (both in terms of intellectual property and computer hardware) were transferred or donated to this non-profit organisation. (See: [http://www.wikimediafoundation.org/bylaws.pdf By-laws of the Wikimedia Foundation (PDF file)]). Larry Sanger had by this time left the project - since it made no profit with which to pay his wages - but Jimbo Wales retains a key role on the board of the Foundation, along with users elected from the Wikipedia community. The Foundation now funds the operation of Wikipedia (and its sister projects) through donations from various sources. Jimbo Wales has since started several other wiki-based projects, affiliated to neither Bomis nor Wikimedia. == External links == * [http://www.bomis.com/ Official Bomis website] **[http://babes.bomis.com/ The Bomis Babe Report] (contains nudity) **[http://premium.bomis.com/ Bomis Premium Website] (contains nudity; subscription-based site) * [http://www.bomis.com/about/slogans.html List of Bomis slogans] – a seemingly random slogan from the list is displayed on each www.bomis.com page * [http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikipedia-l/2001-October/000652.html Jimmy Wales on the Wikipedia-L mailing list about Bomis] Internet companies of the United States Wikipedia history Dot-com Bomis(I removed a lot of old talk.)[For the record, [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Bomis&oldid=11139481 this is the previous state] - User:IMSoP.] I just wanted to comment here on the idea that Larry Sanger had the idea for Wikipedia. This is not correct. The original idea of using a wiki for the encyclopedia project came to me from Jeremy Rosenfeld, an employee at that time. The encyclopedia project itself was fully conceived by me alone, and I funded it, and I hired Larry to run it -- which he did of course with the Nupedia project.--User:Jimbo Wales 18:54, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC) == Another complaint == "However, when the Wikipedia community ruled out advertising as a means of paying for these resources - and in order to reflect the spirit of openness and neutrality central to Wikipedia - it was decided that new arrangements were needed." This is very POV. The Wikipedia community has never "ruled out" advertising, and this article makes it seem like the reason I went the non profit route and no-advertising is in response to resistance from the community. This is not accurate. I have consistently been opposed to advertising on Wikipedia, although in the early days I thought advertising was going to eventually be necessary. Now I think advertising will never be necessary, but I wonder if someday we (the community) might decide that we could do so much good in the world with a small amount of advertising that we might choose to accept it. --User:Jimbo Wales 19:04, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC) :A good point; the idea was merely to explain the events that led to the creation of the WMF - i.e. instead of continuing as a for-profit endeavour. My general understanding was that there was discussion over how best to fund the project, and donations were considered a better route than advertising; I didn't mean to imply that the community rejected a suggestion, but I admit to not considering the possibility of the decision being reversed/altered in the future. I've tweaked the wording slightly, but I wasn't "there", so I could still have it wrong; I'm trying to convey that there were financial as well as "ethical" reasons for Wikipedia not remaining under the ownership of Bomis. - User:IMSoP 11:33, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC) == Another link == [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jimbo_Wales&oldid=6048096#Are_you_the_founder_or_a_co-founder.3F This earlier comment] from Jimbo might be helpful, because it helps to explain why Sanger's claims seem to contradict the above. --User:IMeowbot~User talk:IMeowbot 00:01, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC) See other meanings of words starting from letter: BBA | BC | BD | BE | BF | BG | BH | BI | BJ | BK | BL | BM | BN | BO | BP | BR | BS | BT | BU | BW | BX | BY | BZ |Words begining with Bomis: BoMis Bomis Bomis Bomis.com
