Beit Jala

Beit Jala (Arabic language: بيت جالا, allegedly from Aramaic 'pile of stones') is a small town in Palestinian territories. It is located about 10 km south of Jerusalem, on the western side of the Hebron road, opposite Bethlehem, at about 825m altitude. Beit Jala has about 15,000 Muslim and Christian inhabitants, while a far greater number of mainly Christian persons descended from former inhabitants of Beit Jala live abroad, especially in South America and Central America. Beit Jala, like Bethlehem is home to educational facilities from different religious denomination, including a Russian Orthodox school founded in 1870. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Seminary, responsible for the liturgy education in the Jerusalem Patriarchate, moved to Beit Jala in 1936. The Lutheran congregation runs Talita Kumi School, which has close links to Germany Lutherans. Beit Jala has a hospital and two rehabilitation societies for the disabled: The Arab Society and Lifegate Rehabilitation, a German-Palestinian project. 3500 acres (14 km²) of land are planted with olives, grapes and other crop. Cremisan Cellars, located in the convent of Cremisan, is an important local winemaker. The Beit Jala Skyline is made up by six churches, of which Virgin Mary is the oldest and St. Nicholas the most important (both are Orthodox Christianity), and by two mosques. Beit Jala is famous for its olive wood artifacts. Other industries in the city are tobacco, textiles, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. Beit Jala

I am removing this from Category:Wine regions. This is because it is not a region in the sense of the other ones (administrative areas with particular winemaking regulations). I thought about creating a category for villages which make wine, but these are almost infinite. Unless they have some legal significance (eg French appelations) I dont think they are important. I have put Cremisan into Category:Wineries however. User:Justinc 18:08, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
