BEHEMOTH#REDIRECTBehemoth (bicycle) Behemoth[[Image:Behemoth.jpg|thumb|right|200px|''Behemoth and Leviathan'', an engraving by William Blake]] Behemoth (Hebrew language בהמות Bəhēmôth, ''Behemot'', ''B'hemot'' "Beasts; animals"; Arabic language بهيموث Bahīmūth or بهموت Bahamut) is the untranslated name of an Amphibia mentioned in the Book of Job, 40:15-24. Suggestions as to his identity include a hippopotamus, a water buffalo, a crocodile, and a dinosaur. Most probably, בהמות ''bəhēmôth'' is plural for בהמה ''bəhēmāh'', meaning "animals" in Hebrew language, this structure (pluralis excellentieae, used to express greatness by means of pluralizing the noun) indicates that behemoth is the largest and most powerful animal. Behemoth is the primal unconquerable monster of the land, as Leviathan is the primal monster of the waters of the sea, for this is no mere giant hippopotamus but "He is the first [Authorized Version "chief"] of the ways of God." (''Book of Job'' 40:14) Some readers see a hippopotamus also in ''Book of Isaiah'' 30:6 (''bahamot negeb'' "beasts of the south"). According to midrash recording traditions, it is impossible for anyone to kill a behemoth except for the person who created it, in this case YHWH. A later Jewish haggadic tradition furthermore holds that at the banquet at the end of the world, the behemoth will be served up along with the leviathan and ziz. The Hebrew behemoth is equated with the Persian mythology Hadhayosh, as the leviathan is with the Kar and the ziz with the Simurgh. The text from the Book of Job 40 (King James Version Bible) is as follows: 15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.Metaphorically, the name has come to be used for any extremely large or powerful creature. ==Behemoth in pop culture== * Behemoth (band) for the death metal group * Behemoth (bicycle) a computerized bicycle * Behemoth (Final Fantasy) is a well-known monster in many Final Fantasy videogames. * In the Japanese anime series Big O (anime), the Megadeus of the same name was compared to Behemoth. Also in an episode, there was Megadeus named 'Behemoth' that briefly appeared in the finale. * Behemoth is the name of the trickster servant of Devil in Mikhail Bulgakov's novel ''The Master and Margarita''. He is a large black cat and has a penchant for chess and vodka. In Russian, "Begemot". The word itself means hippopotamus in Russian. == External links == *[http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/ ''Jewish Encyclopedia'']: Behemoth. *[http://www.bookofjob.org Putting God on Trial- The Biblical Book of Job] contains a major section on the literary use of Behemoth. *[http://cr.middlebury.edu/public/russian/Bulgakov/public_html/Begemot.html Bulgakov's Behemoth] Christian mythology Hebrew Bible/Tanakh Jewish mysticism Jewish mythology Legendary creatures Dragons Behemoth''"The Hebrew behemoth is equated with the Persian Hadhayosh, as the leviathan is with the Kar and the ziz with the Simurgh."'' Equated, really? I'd bet not "equated" except in some interpreter's imagination. Where? When? By whom? Equivalents are so much less informative than distinctions. But this is babble as it stands, is it not? --User:Wetman 12:09, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC) : I agree. A naively strong statement as it is without explanation. "Parallels can be drawn between" perhaps but justification is still required. Note amusingly that the Kar link directs to Karaoke. --User:A1r 13:57, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC) Behemoth==Welcome!== :Hi, , Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers to Wikipedia!
