Bedouin[[Image:Bedouin_Resting.jpg|thumbnail|250px|right|Bedouin resting at Mount Sinai]] ''Bedouin'', derived from the Arabic language ''badawi'' بدوي, a generic name for a desert-dweller, is a term generally applied to Arab nomadic groups, who are found throughout most of the desert belt extending from the Atlantic coast of the Sahara via the Western Desert, Sinai Peninsula, and Negev to the eastern coast of the Arabia desert. It is occasionally used to refer to non-Arab groups as well, notably the Beja people of the African coast of the Red Sea. The Bedouins were traditionally divided into related tribes, each led by a Sheikh. Traditionally they would herd camels, sheep, and goats, while riding on highly prized horses, moving according to the seasons for grazing lands. For centuries and into the early 20th century the Bedouin were known for their fierce resistance to outside government and influence. Some notable Bedouin groups in Africa include the Baggara of Sudan and Chad, the Chaamba of Algeria, and the Beni Hassan of Mauritania. When used in relation to food, Bedouin normally means a Casserole baked in a covered ceramic dish. Almost all Muslim, yes. - User:Mustafaa 11:18, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC) The question of religion and the bedouin is an interesting one, and has been discussed in the historical sources for centuries. First, it should be noted that the term "bedouin" does not refer to a single, homogeneous group of people. People calling themselves bedouin are widely scattered geographically and highly differentiated in their claimed ancestry, sense of identity, mode of subsistence, and social customs (including religious practice). If asked, many members of bedouin tribes would say that they are Muslims, but many of these same individuals also engage in practices and hold beliefs that many Muslim leaders would shun as "un-Islamic." Indeed, the question becomes more complex when one considers the fact that some Muslims call other Muslims "unbelievers" on account of political or religious differences. (Witness, for example, the belief of conservative Wahhabis calling other Muslims such as Shia "nonbelievers" because their definition of Islam is so narrow. abtoth 10:04, 21 Dec 2004 arabs in general had a pre-islamic religion before islam. come to think of it, off the top of my head i can't think of one single people that is today predominantly islamic that didn't have at least one other religion before islam.
