In mathematics, a basis or set of generators is a collection of objects that can be systematically combined to produce a larger collection of objects. I disagree with User:Michael Hardy's 22:33, 2004 Jun 24 edit. There is no point in changing the first sentence of every mathematical article in Wikipedia to "In mathematics" or "In whatever". It is a disrespect for other people's style and doesn't add value. This kind of practice has gone out of control and gotta be stopped.
