BYONDBYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream) is a suite of programs for creating and playing online games. Started in 1997 by a company named Dantom (which consisted of two people - Dan and Tom), it was initially called DUNG (Dantom's Universal Network Game). After a few years they rechristened it BYOND, reasoning that something called DUNG is hard to sell. BYOND is a powerful tool for anyone looking to make an online game with very little time to spend learning a programming language. Although geared to RPG style gameplay, it has been proven to work well with card games, board games, and even utilities that aren't games at all. Graphical (tile-based), rogue-like, browser-based CGI games, and pure text-based games are all possible. Membership is free, and the community is large and willing to help. ==Playing games== Although it is technically possible to create TelNet-compatible games with the BYOND system, most games currently available are only playable with the Dream Seeker client software which is part of the download on the [http://games.byond.com/download/ BYOND download page]. Before you can join a game for the first time, you will be asked if you wish to create a key. This key is universal for all BYOND games and the BYOND forums, and provides security from impersonators. In order to play a game, one can either directly choose to download a game from the [http://games.byond.com BYOND Hub] and then host it (via the host button at the bottom right of the screen), or join a [http://games.byond.com/hub/GamesLive current LIVE game] by clicking on the join link in the game page of the game you to join. ===The BYOND suite=== Four main programs comprise the BYOND suite: * Dream Seeker is the BYOND client software used for playing games. It is also possible to host games for others using this program. * Dream Maker is for creating and compiling games. It includes a code editor, map editor, and graphics editor. * Dream Daemon is for hosting games when the host doesn't want to be playing the game. Alternatively, it may be preferred over Dream Seeker for stability reasons; as Dream Daemon is a much simpler application than Dream Seeker and contains a minimal user interface, it is less likely to crash. * The Pager is a standalone program that allows players to page and view the location of another BYONDer (a member-only perk), as well as surf the hub for any live games. With the release of BYOND 3.5, the pager was extracted from it's place in the Dream Seeker and made central to the BYOND suite. ==Creating games== ===The DM language=== BYOND games are created using the unique "DM" programming language. DM has roots in C programming language , but is also syntactically similar to Python programming language in its use of white space. DM programs are compiled to bytecode. Further detailed information about the DM language can be found in the [http://www.byond.com/docs/ref/ DM reference]. ===DMCGI=== While BYOND is used primarily for games that run using it's Dream Seeker client, a webserver with BYOND installed can also make use of DMCGI. DMCGI works just like normal DM and can be used for a variety of things from browser based games (such as [http://www.ddtgames.com/WebGames/index.dmb?game=/game/Extreme_Hangman Extreme Hangman]) to dynamic websites and forums. BYOND's very own wiki (the BYONDBwicki) was written using DMCGI. http://bwicki.byond.com/ByondBwicki.dmb DMCGI can easily interact with other BYOND worlds. So it's possible to make a game, then have statistics such as the amount of players, frag counts, high scores or how long the server has been running displayed right there on the games website. Not only that but because the interaction works both ways so you could make it possible to read logs and moderate your game via a standard browser. DMCGI also makes use of BYOND keys with its built in authentication system. So when someone uses your forum, browser based game or wiki there's no need to make them sign up. All they'll have to do is login to their BYOND key and they're set to play any of your games (unless you choose to use your own authentication system, which is always an option). ===Getting started=== Originally sold as a separate book as the "Blue Book", the DM Guide to programming in BYOND is now also available online and is a good learning tool to the language and its abilities: [http://www.byond.com/docs/guide/ DM Guide] A person going by the alias Zilal has made several tutorials that explain the basics of DM very well. Her first tutorial can be found at [http://zilal.byond.com/tutorials/zbt.html zilal.byond.com]. Other tutorials can be found at BYONDscape's [http://www.byondscape.com/ascape.dmb?type=%2FForm%2FSearch&query=&category=Tutorials tutorials listing]. ==Recommended games== There are a wide variety of multiplayer games available on BYOND to satisfy anybody's taste in gaming. * Action ** [http://games.byond.com/hub/splattergnome/splattertag splattertag] - A game of tag with power-ups * Adventure ** [http://games.byond.com/hub/SuperSaiyanGokuX/Murder_Mansion Murder Mansion] - An advanced form of multiplayer Cluedo with murder, weapons, and intrigue * Roleplaying **[http://games.byond.com/hub/GOTENKSSS5/DragonballXeno Dragonball Xeno] - A DBZ Fan Game **[http://games.byond.com/hub/Woo/LostLegends Lost Legends] * Strategy **[http://games.byond.com/hub/LummoxJr/Incursion Incursion] - A game of Risk **[http://games.byond.com/hub/Crispy/YetAnotherGenericSpace-AgeConquestGame YAGSACG] - A space strategy game * Puzzle **[http://games.byond.com/hub/Zilal/SheepII Sheep II] - A Lemminglike sheepstravaganza **[http://games.byond.com/hub/DDT/DragonSnot DragonSnot] - A rather sticky puzzler * Community ** [http://games.byond.com/hub/Xooxer/Chatters Chatters] ==External links== *[http://www.byond.com BYOND Games] - Official site *[http://www.byondscape.com BYONDscape] - An online payzine for BYONDers *[http://digitalbyond.net.tc digitalBYOND] - An online zine/forum with articles, tutorials, and game-hosting services Game creation software BYONDI personally love byond, so simple, yet deep. Like a fine lass. Jump in, tell em' Scoobert sent ya. --Scoobert :Tell who, the lass or BYOND? User:YMIHere 07:18, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC) Why not both? - User:24.1.151.35 03:30, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC) == Remove "Recommended Games" == In my opinion, the "Recommended Games" section is little more than a blatant advertisement for specific BYOND games. Remember; the goal of Wikipedia is to present information, not opinions :) Anybody care to agree or disagree with me? -Kujila I agree, to a small degree. Part of informing includes pointing people where to go. I think a link to chatters, and maybe a few other byond endorsed things. -Scoobert See other meanings of words starting from letter: BBA | BC | BD | BE | BF | BG | BH | BI | BJ | BK | BL | BM | BN | BO | BP | BR | BS | BT | BU | BW | BX | BY | BZ |Words begining with BYOND: BYOND BYOND
