
BG Group Plc is an energy production and distribution company which is headquartered in Reading, Berkshire outside London, England. It is one of the companies created by the demerger of the former British gas monopoly British Gas, hence its name. However, it is ''not'' the company which uses the trading name "British Gas" in the United Kingdom, that is Centrica. See the British Gas article for further details on the British Gas demerger. BG Group's main business is exploration for and the extraction of natural gas, liquefied natural gas and to a lesser extent oil. It sells these products to wholesale customers such as retail gas suppliers and electricity generating companies. It also owns some gas pipelines and is involved in some power generation projects. It is active around the world, with only a minority of its business being in the UK. In 2003 46% of its revenue came from the Americas, 37% from Europe including the UK, and 17% from the rest of the world. In the year ended 31 December 2004 it made a profit after tax of £904 million on turnover of £4.082 billion.
