BC-STV==Introduction== BC-STV is a proposed variant of Single Transferrable Vote voting system. It was recommended by the Assembly on Electoral Reform in British Columbia. The ruling Liberal Goverment put together the assembly and gave it a mandate to come up with new system of selecting MLAs. The assembly recommended this system, and the Liberal Goverment put it to a referendum at the same time as the provinical election. It required 60% of the popular vote and 60% of the ridings to support in order for it to be passed. It recieved 97% of the ridings, but only 57% of the vote. It is unclear from here how things will proceed. The Premier, Gordon Campbell, has said that he will bring results for review in the legislature. What the result of that will be is unclear. ==The Basic Idea== Instead of every riding sending a single MLA back to the legislature, under STV every riding would send somewhere between 2-7 MLAs. Additionaly, instead of voting for a single candidate, the voters would rank candidates in the order that they choose. Candidates would be chosen porportionaly according to the lists that the voters provide. This is achieved by transfering votes between different candidates. If the first choice of a voter is eliminated during the count due to the fact he has too few votes the voters vote transfers to his second choice. On the other hand, if a candidate has more support then he requires in order to win, then the extra votes are transfered to the next choices of that candidate's supporters.
