Azalea

{| align=right | |- | |- | |} Azaleas are flowering shrubs making up part of the genus ''Rhododendron''. Originally azaleas were classed as a different genus of plant, but now they are recognised as two of the eight sub-genera of rhododendrons - subgenus ''Pentanthera'' typified by ''Rhododendron nudiflorum'' and subgenus ''Tsutsusi'' typified by ''Rhododendron tsutsusi''. There are deciduous azaleas, and evergreen azaleas. One of the major differences between azaleas and the rest of the rhododendron family is their size. Another is their flower growth. Rhododendrons grow their flowers in clusters, while most azaleas have terminal bloom (one flower per flower stem). However, they have so many stems that during the flowering season they are a solid mass of colour. Azaleas are recognised by these flowers blooming all at once, in a showy display for a month or two in spring (season). The exception to this rule is a small group of azaleas which grow their flowers in tight terminal clusters that look like little balls of colour. Plant enthusiasts have created hybrid azaleas for hundreds of years. This human genetic modification has produced over 10,000 different cultivars which are propagated by cuttings. Azalea seed can also be collected and germination. Azaleas should be grown in well-drained garden soil or in pot, in a cool, shady position. Fertilizer is optional, although some species do need regular pruning. == External links == *[http://home.earthlink.net/~rhodyman/rhody.html Rhododendron & Azaleas] Flowers Ericales zh-tw:杜鵑花

Eh, about that picture, or more precisely, its caption. 0.8m is not the same as 2ft (=0.6m). -- User:Kimiko 20:48, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC) :Not much point in writing the above! Just change it yourself, this is an editable pedia. I've done it for you.
:User:Arpingstone 08:59, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC) ::And how did you know which of 0.8m or 2ft was the correct height of the plant? Maybe it is in fact 0.8m high and 2ft was just an incorrect conversion? -::- User:Kimiko 21:18, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC) :::Interesting question! I put the picture on to the pedia (the plant is in my garden) and wrote the caption. The plant is in fact 2 feet (0.6m) high. Soon it will be 0.8m high but the photo will never change so 0.6m it is!
