Asshat#Redirect asshole AsshatI thought it was a variation of butthead? == Asshat's common on [http://slashdot.com Slashdot] too == I have also seen a lot of it on [http://slashdot.com Slashdot], undoubtedly mutually influenced by [http://Fark.com Fark], and other websites popular with geeks. --User:Dovwas 02:08, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC) == asshat != asshole == Contrary to the opening sentence, I don't think "asshat" is a derivation of "asshole". Calling someone an asshole implies a deep dislike for them as a person. IMHO, an "asshole" is someone you consider a jerk because of the way they treat people, generally because they are very arrogant or don't care about others' feelings. An "asshat", in contrast, is saying that someone simply is clueless about a patricular issue; they have their head up their butt. It is certainly also derogatory, but not maligining the entire nature of the designee, just their knowledge. Maybe the asshat is also a bit arrogant, in claiming he knows something that we think he is ignrant of, but he is not necessarily mean-spirited. Basically, "stupid != mean". "!=", btw, means "not equal to", as in many computer prgramming languages. It's got nothing to do with having your head up your ass. It's just a random internet insult, like cockbite, homofag, assbeef etc. :* Agree. I'd be much more offended at being called an asshole than being called an asshat. It seems to have similar connotations to dumbass, fucktard, and various other mild internet insults. — User:Flamingspinach | User_talk:Flamingspinach 07:36, 2005 Mar 2 (UTC) ---- I found a picture of an asshat, but it's probably copyright: http://www.hopscotchdressingup.co.uk/store/hat_donkey.jpg Cute, eh? -- 15:33, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC) ---- Me and a friend once decided that the term must come from Futurama, the episode where the Professor creates a hat that makes a monkey smart. At one point the monkey puts the hat on his ass instead...hence, asshat. Is that a possible source, or were we just making crap up? User:Adam Bishop 05:54, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC) :I saw that episode and it was a riot, but I doubt that the writers of Futurama were the first to think of putting a hat on an ass. Andre">User:Andrevan (User_talk:Andrevan) 22:04, Feb 20, 2005 (UTC) Unless that episode aired in Futurama's first season, this isn't a viable source for the phrase, since "asshat" appeared on Usenet in 1999.
