Asian-ArgentinesThe term Asian-Argentine may refer to any Argentina of Asia (usually East-Asian) descent, especially people of China, Korean, Japanese, or other East-Asian descent. == History == Especially in the last quarter of the 20th century a small wave of Asian immigrants moved to Argentina, concentrating overwhelmingly in the capital, Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to Argentine newspaper El Clarín, there are more than 60,000 Chinese immigrants or people of Chinese descent living in the country. There's also a sizable community of about 35,000 South Korean-Argentines, concentrated especially in the Balvanera and Flores, Buenos Aires Barrios of Buenos Aires. As in the United States, some of the earliest Asians in Argentina were from Japan, particularly from the Okinawa Prefecture. The first Argentine Nisei (second generation), Seicho Arakaki, was born in 1911--his parents were from Okinawa. By 1969, when Argentina had a population of 23,000,000, there were about 23,000 Japanese-Argentines. As with Asian Americans and Asian Canadians, Asian-Argentines have gained a reputation for their economic prosperity. Many Asian-Argentines are known for owning small service-oriented businesses such as grocery stores or photo-developing shops. Some are also associated with the manufacturing sector as well. == Discrimination == Argentina's historical Europe heritage has manifested itself in a populace which at times can be highly homogenous compared to other South America nations and the United States and Canada, which have much higher percentages of non-European citizens overall than does Argentina. Unfamiliarity with non-Europeans has lent a certain "exoticness" of Asian-Argentines, which may be positive or negative depending on the context. The relative prosperity of many Asian-Argentines has led their being resented by some other Argentines not economically as well-off, and discrimination against Asian-Argentines grew in the 1990s with occasional sensationalist media reports alleging widespread corruption amongst Asian-Argentine business-owners. Despite the existence of admiration of Asian-Argentines' economic successes, it is debatable whether the phenomenon of Asians as "model minority", often associated with people of Asian descent in North America, may be applied in the same way to the Asian-Argentine community.
