Arab is a city in Marshall County, Alabama and Cullman County, Alabama counties in northeastern Alabama. The name of the city is pronounced "ay-RAB" and was an unintentional misspelling by the US Postal Service of the city's intended name, taken from a city founder, Arad Thompson. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,174. == Geography == Arab is located at 34°19'40" North, 86°29'55" West (34.327863, -86.498613). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.3 square kilometer (12.9 square mile). 33.1 km² (12.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water. == Demographics == As of the census of 2000, there are 7,174 people, 3,012 households, and 2,075 families residing in the city. The population density is 216.9/km² (561.8/mi²). There are 3,223 housing units at an average density of 97.4/km² (252.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.29% Race (U.S. census), 0.18% Race (U.S. census) or Race (U.S. census), 0.49% Race (U.S. census), 0.39% Race (U.S. census), 0.00% Race (U.S. census), 0.17% from race (U.S. census), and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Race (U.S. census) or Race (U.S. census) of any race. There are 3,012 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are Marriage living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.87. In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,716, and the median income for a family is $45,761. Males have a median income of $32,425 versus $24,265 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,035. 10.0% of the population and 8.2% of families are below the poverty line.
