Alan JohnsonThe Right Honourable Alan Arthur Johnson (born 17 May 1950) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He has been Labour Party (UK) member of Parliament for Hull West and Hessle (UK Parliament constituency) since 1997, and was junior minister at the Department for Education and Skills. He entered the Cabinet of the United Kingdom in September 2004 as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, following the resignation of Andrew Smith. After the UK general election, 2005 he moved to become Secretary of State for Productivity, Energy and Industry, a post which replaced the DTI but it was shortly reverted to the old name Secretary of State for Trade and Industry after complaints were made about the new name. Before entering Parliament he was on Labour's National Executive Committee, and had been General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (UK). There have been many reports that Alan Johnson was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain from 1975-1983. ==External links== *[http://www.alanjohnson.org/ Alan Johnson MP] official site *[http://politics.guardian.co.uk/person/0,9290,-2733,00.html Guardian Unlimited Politics - Ask Aristotle: Alan Johnson MP] *[http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/alan_johnson/kingston_upon_hull_west_and_hessle TheyWorkForYou.com - Alan Johnson MP] *[http://www.newstatesman.com/People/200411290022 New Statesman - NS Profile: Alan Johnson] 29 November 2004 1950 births British MPs UK Labour Party politicians British Secretaries of State Members of the Privy Council See other meanings of words starting from letter: AAB | AC | AD | AE | AF | AG | AH | AI | AJ | AK | AL | AM | AN | AO | AP | AR | AS | AT | AU | AW | AX | AY | AZ |Words begining with Alan_Johnson: Alan_Johnson
