Akilathirattu Ammanai (in Tamil language, akilam(world) + thirattu(collection) + ammanai(ballad)), also called Thiru Edu, (venerable book) is the main religious book of the Ayyavazhi faith of Southern India. As per internal evidence, Hari Gopalan Citar, wrote this book on the 27th day of the Tamil month of Karthikai (November/December) in the year 1016 M.E.(1841 AD). The author claims that God woke him up during his sleep and commissioned him to take a dictation of what he said. According to the author, the book is the story of God coming in this Kali Yuga to rule the world by transforming it into that of Dharma Yukam. This grand story of faith has woven the historical facts about Ayya Vaikundar and his activities along with episodes from the Hindu Puranas (mythologies) and Itihasas (epics), in their reinterpreted form. It is presented as if Lord Vishnu is narrating the whole story to his consort Lakshmi.It is cast into two major parts: the first part being an account of the ages preceding that of the present Kali yuga, and the second part being an account of the activities of Ayya Vaikundar leading up to his attaining Vaikundam. The language of Akilathirattu is Tamil and the Literary genre is that of a ballad. The narration alternates between two sub genres called Viruttam and Natai. Both the sub-genres have used lots of literary styles such as alliterations, hyperbatons, etc., Akilathirattu was preserved in Palm leaves until 1939 when it was given printed form. According to Akilattirattu Ammanai there are eight yugas (aeons) from the formation till the end of Universe.
