
Adachi (足立区; -ku) is a 23 special wards located in the northern part of Tokyo, Japan. The ward is separated into two areas: a small strip of land between the Sumida River and Arakawa River and a larger area north of the Arakawa River. It was founded on March 15, 1947. The ward is bordered with cities of Kawaguchi, Hatogaya, Soka and Yashio in Saitama prefecture and Katsushika, Sumida, Arakawa and Kita-ku, Tokyo in Tokyo. As of 2003, the ward has an estimated population of 621,848 and a population density of 11,688.87 persons per square kilometer. The total area is 53.20 km². I’ve added a map and two pictures of the lower rivers to this page. I lived in Adachi-ku (Odai), so I have plenty of pictures if this section ever warrants further expansion. Unfortunately, I don’t have much in the way of useful information to add. Question: In regards to Arakawa River. Since "kawa" means river, isn't saying Arakawa river redundant? Would “Ara River” be more accurate, or merely confuse the issue? In wikipedia, it seems we have not resolved this problem yet.
