Ab-The prefix ab- or abs- is derived from the Latin prefix ab-, which means "off", "away", or "from" and usually expresses removing, separation, or a lower value. According to the ''Oxford English Dictionary'', English language words beginning in ''ab-'' were originally carried directly through from French language, as ''abuse'', or appropriated from more modern French, as ''absorb''. The ''OED'' notes that in recent times, following the model of ''abnormal'', some medical terms use ''ab-'' to mean "away from", as ''ab-oral'', "away from the mouth". ---- The prefix ''ab-'' is also used to indicate "absolute" in units used in electromagnetism, such as ''abhenry'' for inductance, ''abohm'' for electrical resistance and ''abvolt'' for electrical potential. ==See also== List of English prefixes Prefixes Ab-The article appears to this newbie to be a dictionary entry suitable for conversion to ''Wiktionary'', and for VfD here. I copied its markup to the ''Wiktionary'' Talk:Ab- page with a note apologizing for not doing more, & suggestion that someone fold it into the existing one (which is much shorter). Unless some kind soul rescues me, in the next couple weeks, from making (more than usual) of a fool of myself, i'll propose the article Ab- for deletion, IIRC by tracking down the VfD page and adding it to a list of deletion-worthy pages. --User:Jerzy 00:56, 2003 Nov 2 (UTC) See other meanings of words starting from letter: AAB | AC | AD | AE | AF | AG | AH | AI | AJ | AK | AL | AM | AN | AO | AP | AR | AS | AT | AU | AW | AX | AY | AZ |Words begining with Ab-: Ab- Ab- AB-10 Ab-e_Gharib Ab-e_Ghereyyeb AB-FedRep AB-FedRep Ab-initio AB-me AB-me
